What a weird collection of pieces left in! I'm astonished by the number of IWCs still there.

I've owned a couple of the pieces still going strong in the competition, but I sold them both for one reason or another. I think I'd probably own 2 out of the remaining ones left in... no more than that.

7 Day doesn't surprise me, but the Yacht Club??????? My god it is neck and neck with the VC Overseas.

I understand, but then again I have major issues with thinking about the VC Overseas when the Royal Oak is long gone. As with many tournaments, its a matter of match-ups getting to here. I'm grumpy about the early knock-out of the GMT. Right now IWC makes some very classic looking pieces and, though I didn't vote for it this time, that Zenith Big Pilot is growing on me a lot.

The watch that should have won didn't make it past the play in round..........

Some thoughts........

Perhaps the results are surprising (disappointing??) because it's an open competition that lets guys like me vote - a watch novice who comes here to learn and has little to contribute. I have a limited understanding of watch technology, can't judge the craftsmanship from the pictures, and am not really tuned into what's hot and what's not in the watch world. Further, with no knowledge of prices, it becomes a picture-based beauty pageant for me - the prettiest face with no chance to fondle, understand what's in the case and can't determine whether I'd be willing to pay the (unknown) price for her.

Perhaps there should have been three categories of voters:
> Watch experts - to better judge the value of the various contestants
> Fashionistas - to isolate style points
> Novices - like me who just like what we like and pay what we want to pay

BTW, I have an Aerospace, a Colt Chronograph II, a Rolex Daytona (gold/stainless), a Baume & Mericer gold auto sporting a custom gold band, an Omega gold quartz also sporting a custom gold band, a Noblia quartz on leather, and a titanium Casio ProTrek riding titanium. So you can see my "collection" looks like a dog's breakfast.

Roff, thanks for your efforts on the competition - I've learned a lot by watching it. Your efforts on the Forum are also greatly appreciated and have been invaluable to me as I try to climb up the learning curve. The patience you exhibit, the time you invest and the knowledge you willingly share are indeed impressive.

Agreed. A staggering amount (of IWC's) when you think about all the brands listed at the start. I haven't bothered to look back through the initial match-ups but I'm sure that had something to do with it. Seems like a lot of GO's also - only 2 but it feels like a lot for some reason.

For me some good pieces left but no where near as many as I thought there would be at the end. Some remarkably easy choices.

I don't want to assume so I'll ask which one you're referring to?

I think that is all certainly true, and beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, but even as a 'fashion show' I have found some of the results surprising. I was expecting a 'brand vote' in early rounds which doesn't seem to have happened - PAMs and JLCs going out early, but while I knew that not everyone would agree with my votes I did think that I had a good feel for the types of watch that the community liked and so had some ideas about what would make it far in to the competition.

Match ups obviously make a difference, and with a low level of participation 1 or 2 votes either way can also make a big difference. There have been some things that have been downright odd - tiebreakers that turned into landslides for example, but generally just surprising. It's certainly not disappointing (to me), it's all a bit of fun anyway (I'm well used to the fact that most people here are always wrong   ), just hope that the concept grows in the future to make it more worthwhile.

Looks like I will go 7 for 8 this round. There seems to be some sanity in the voting. The one I didn't vote for - the Speedy in the particular matchup, was sure to go on to the next round. Can't complain about that one.

I'm 5 of 8 but I'd be happy to own just about any of the remaining contestants, surprising though some may be.

Only 3 out of 8 for me at the moment. Guess my watch taste is a little different to the majority!

I managed 6 for this round which I'm not all that surprised by given that I'm pretty traditional when it comes to watches.

Ah yes now I remember. No doubt you're looking forward to it.

Quarter Final match ups are now open in the Forum Projects section - viewforum.php?f=25. Match ups are getting tougher obviously, but the Sub vs. the Speedy is the obvious battle of the titans here!

I think I had 4 or 5 out of 8 in the third round, just about typical (50%) for me for the competition.

Quarterfinals were easier for me to pick, but will probably still be at my 50% mark. Getting down to the wire now!

I'm currently only at 50% on the voting so far here.

I'm actually surprised not to be in the minority more - 3 and 1 currently, though not sure it will stay that way. There's still one match up where I wanted to vote 'neither', but I think that we're going to end up with a worthy winner, though maybe not the final that I expected.
