Post subject:  What would be a good addition to my collection?
I was fortunate enough to inherit a vintage Breitling (in the process of trading) and have my wife purchase a Frederique Constant as a Christmas/Birthday/Next Christmas present (she misread the tag). The result is that I have become interested in having a small watch collection (4-6 watches) and am wondering what would be good pieces to have in the collection. Once the trade is complete the collection will consist of

Citizen Eco Drive Titanium (don't care if it gets hurt watch)

Some watches that appeal to me are Superocean 44 A1739102 Abyss blue, Rolex Submariner Ref. 14060M or 14060, and Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 2208.50. I don't do a lot of water sports so they do not appeal to me because of their diving nature. I'm just interested to here opinions on whether another watch adds anything to the collection (hmm, what answer would I expect from a watch collecting forum) and what might be out there that I am not even aware of.

Some great pieces there, really like the silver Navitimer!

Looks like you have a dressier piece and a couple chronographs leaning toward the sportier side. I like your thinking of a diver style piece to add. Lots to choose from obviously, some other brands in the diver arena (other than the ones you mentioned) might be Ball, Oris, IWC, maybe even Panerai ?

If you can wear a larger piece, the new Breitling Seawolf and Avenger II ?

Thanks. I think with a matte black case and a yellow dial the Seawolf would be amazing (maybe they'll do that pairing someday). The Avenger II feels a little too similar to what's already in hand. Though I wouldn't mind adding a Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon even though there is already a Speedmaster.

You weren't supposed the fuel the flames, Matt. Who knows, if I do start setting some aside for another watch, I could certainly do worse than the Dark Side. It also has appeal since I grew up with moon landings, shuttle missions and the Force.

Sorry, I may have misunderstood your original post, thought you were interested in a diver style but now after rereading maybe not.

Very cool.

I think it's more an interest in having a diverse collection. If you are only going to have a few watches and want to cover all the bases for dress and function, what does that collection look like?

Yeah, I know :) . I'm not a dress watch guy, so my suggestions revolve around the sport pieces.

I consider your FC and the Navitimer to be dressy, speedmaster for casual, so you really need a big, bad, hard core sport/tool watch, :lol: .

(p.s.- along with my Breitlings I also have a Speedmaster and three dive style pieces)

Wow, did not look at pricing on the Dark Side or the Chronospace. That's a little steep but maybe that is what big, bad, hardcore runs. For big and diver style I might look at the Superocean Heritage maybe A1732016-G642-205S-A20D.2 (blue bezel, silver face, blue rubber) which is more along the budget I'd probably have without trading away anything.

While I am no Rolex fanboy, I would have to admit that no collection is complete without a Rolex. I would say go for a Sub C or GMT II C. They make the most impressive ceramic bezel IMHO. Round hour markers which you do not have in your collection yet where aesthetics is concerned. GMT complication and elapsed time bezel are also useful functions that you can get to use and not in your existing pieces yet.

I was thinking about a GMT or Worldtimer watch as well. I do hope to do some traveling and either would be useful. The question is whether Rolex GMT II C is THE GMT or if there are better options, if that is what I would like to add. Breitling's Transocean Chronograph Unitime is certainly nice but new is a little pricey. How common are vintage Breitling worldtimer models?

A few things to consider for a traveller watch:

-must compliment any attire since you will dress differently to different countries depending on their weather and the occasion.

-must have reasonable water resistance, which IMO minimum 10 bars. So that you can engage in almost any activity without having to remove it in advance and risk getting it stolen. Also changing temperatures in different countries challenges your watch(eg, heavy rains, snow, extreme hot weathers, etc) so a slightly tougher watch will be good.

-must not be too blingy as you wouldn't want to get robbed in another country.

GMT II C fits the first 2 criteria but I am not so sure about the 3rd one. Every man on the street knows what's a Rolex so that slightly increases the risk. But if you are just getting a steel one with no gold or diamonds then it will be better. However don't underestimate the bling because the lack of AR coating on the outer sapphire plus the superb finish on the ceramic bezel cause it to stand out quite a bit.

Other than the 3rd point I feel that the GMT II C or Sub C seems to compliment your existing collection best, whether aesthetically or functionality. Provided if you don't mind seeing them often on other people's wrists.

That gives me a good idea of what function is missing and a target for saving. Since Rolex is so "common," it shouldn't be to hard to find a pre-owned GMT II C at a relatively good price. It will just mean I'll need to be extra careful since there are probably lots of fakes.
