Hi Everyone

Today has been very interesting for me and the other students. First when we arrived at school we had a introduction into our
second year with a lecture about time and the science around it, After we then each got our first lot of second year tools which contained a lot of tools so we set about organising our benches as we already had a lot of tools from the first year.

So we checked everything was all present and correct. Then we received another bag with more tools that also needed organising so we could efficiently find the tools when we needed them. After this our teacher quickly got us into the first part of the second year this was manipulation and getting our fingers warmed up and ready so he presented us with ten incabloc then showed us how to disassemble and reassemble but before he showed us a very very important step that is sometimes forgotten by watchmakers that can cause a lot of damage and this was to sharpen our tweezers the they had a matt finish this is important because when the tweezers are used for a long time they burnish and helps ping parts around the room. So we sharpened them then set about disassembling them and reassembling thankfully I didn't loose any parts and got them back together we had to do this about four times on each incabloc. Then we also had to hold two cap jewel in tweezers in each hand and rotate them with out dropping the jewel out this was to help us keep the same amount of pressure on the tweezers. We started at 9 and finished at 7 so it was very intensive sat at the bench. We will be getting our white lab coats soon just had to be measured up and sent of for the logo putting on them.

Tomorrow we do lots of screwdriver sharpening we have 24 screwdrivers to sharpen and more incabloc practice but it looks to be a interesting few months as we are also trying to get our gear train exam finished before christmas break.

And as always thanks for reading and I hope its interesting for you and theirs lots of pictures this time.
Thanks Joe. :) :)

Very nice Joe - looks like Christmas came early with all those Bergeon boxes. Looks like you have a lot of balance wheel work in your future - love that poising tool.

Hi Roff yes Christmas had come early today very existing to see all the tools. He said tomorrow he's going to make us sharpen screwdrivers all day and if their not perfect we have to do them again and again. And when It comes to straightening wheels out he's going to give us hundreds to flatten out haha but their is some very interesting tools their I can't wait to use them.

Thanks Joe :)

Flattening balance wheels can be a very frustrating, but very rewarding experience. My truing calipers (same as your 5896) are the source of much joy and much frustration, but I have managed to resist the temptation of throwing them across the room so far

Always enjoy these posts Joe, thanks. I had a glimpse of the skills required when I did a JLC masterclass (as recounted @)

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=47343

It only enhanced my admiration for the concentration and dexterity required. ("Now, don't squeeze those tweezers too tightly, or..." [ping] "well, yes, that happens..."

Impressive stuff, Joe, you have my respect and admiration!

Wielding a Bergeon 6767-F in anger challenges the limits of my horological dexterity!

Hi yes the course looked very interesting I hope they will do more. And yes this is one of the things that you have
to get used to is just holding the tweezers with the right amount of pressure or ping haha I think at times I have spend more time
on the floor than on the bench. :)

Thank you to everyone for your comments Its nice to have support from everyone. I hope when I set the workshop up in the future to have it in glass so people will be able to see what we do and maybe have some short demonstrations to clients just so people can see what we do and why we do certain things and of corse to hopefully to encourage a new generation of watchmakers.
Also a few more pictures from today of screwdriver sharpening so we arrived and first started with the same warm up as yesterday just to build up dexterity. And then we learnt how to sharpen screwdrivers so we had 24 to do and the same tomorrow.

And again thank you everyone
Joe :) :)

I love these posts, Joe. It really makes me admire even more what's on my wrist knowing how much training the watchmaker had to go through. The way you describe it, it almost sounds like military training!

Crickey, with the amount of screwdriver sharpening going on, you're gonna need another set before you've even started!

Another great update Joe! Keep them coming.
