Question for all the sellers on the forum. I completed a transaction over 3 weeks ago and the buyer received the watch and was very pleased with the condition. All of a sudden over 3 weeks later the buyer emailed me to say that they changed the bracelet to a strap and noticed some scratches on the lugs and where the bracelet rests against the case back.

What is a seller to do in this situation? It has been over 3 weeks, how do I know the buyer didn't scratch the watch when changing the bracelet?

If it's been 3 weeks, then that's on the buyer. They should have given it a better look over when the watch was received. What condition did you list the watch in?

Moreso, there will always be some marks on the case between the lugs from a tight fitting end link, even on a brand new watch. It isn't damage or defect - it is the natural condition of a watch. The buyer is uneducated. Educate him. The 3 weeks part isn't the point.

I listed the watch at 95%+......There is not one mark on the crystal, bezel, and the bracelet is brand new from when I purchased the watch from another seller. I received the watch on the bracelet when I bought it, never took it off the bracelet. The new buyer claims to have taken it off the bracelet and there are scratches against where the bracelet and watch head meet. I would think this is because of the tight fit and friction. Anyway the buyer is saying that you can see the marks when wearing the watch on a strap instead of the bracelet. Something tells me that they caused these scratches when trying to swap out the bracelet though.

Scratches inside of the lugs are pretty much to be expected on any used watch. Besides that, 3 weeks is too long to wait to mention a problem. Sucks, but you can't be responsible for the watch forever, right?

Well personally I'd disagree that scratched lugs are a given on a brand new watch as I'm incredibly anal about that kind of thing and not a single brand new watch I've had has ever had any scratches on the lugs. Additionally I go to great lengths (tape on the lugs, etc) to ensure I don't get scratches on there when I change straps. It's just a pet OCD hate of mine,

HOWEVER, there is no way on Earth a buyer can expect a used watch not to have scratches in that area, as not everyone is as anal as I am about preventing them. Secondly if he's only just looked at it after 3 weeks of ownership, then the buyer's a fool IMO as overall condition is the first thing I'd look at. Thirdly there is absolutely no way you can know that he hasn't scratched it himself in that time, and lastly you listed it at 95% so IMO a couple of lug scratches would easily fall into the 5%.

So in answer to your question, "what's a seller to do?", my reply would be, "Not a damn thing!".

Driver it's not scratches on the lugs, rather marks on the case between the lugs where the solid end link sits against it. Every watch I have owned, at least all the ones I have changed out from bracelet to strap, have some markings there. SS against SS = marks.

My mistake - I didn't read the post fully enough.

In that case, yes I agree that it's an inherent and highly likely "feature" of all watches that have ever had a tight-fitting bracelet attached. But it's also even less of a reason for a buyer to complain, especially as it's on a used watch.

So my reply to the OP's orignally question would still be, "Not a damn thing!".
