Post subject:  MY WIFE's NEW WATCH

Hi Everyone,

I have been tinkering in the Workshop again. This time to make a watch for my wife. It was 4 months in gestation, from the initial design to strapping on her wrist. It’s something I have wanted to do for her for some time, and only now feel confident enough to tackle a smaller watch. My personal view since finishing this one is that; any watch under 35mm (give or take) is tougher going.

I was also surprised at how hard it is to get reasonably small movements and components from suppliers. Big chronos, yes, no problem. Smaller watches, well that’s seems to be a different story. This is a 2824 automatic of some 30mm diameter, and as you could guess the actual watch ended up about 38mm overall.

A bit big for small wrists I hear you say. Well, no actually. Seems to be pretty good on my wife’s wrist and the one thing she is very pleased with is the weight (or lack of it). It’s only about 60gms. She wears 25 - 28mm watches normally. It could have done with a 16mm strap instead of 14mm and of better quality too. Other than that though, I am not sure I would change much.

The watch went together (after some initial drill bit teething troubles) relatively easy. In fact, this time all I had to do was remove burrs and clean the parts and it literally just fitted together. I was pretty pleased by that as the tolerances are getting somewhat better.

She is happy with it and that pleases me even more.

Thank you for looking in.
