Hello

Not a watchmaking school update as such this time. But this morning I received a fairly big box from the postman I wasn't expecting this although I did email them asking them about watchmaking.
It was from IWC and it contained some nice books and gifts Like eye loupe and key rings and a hat. Their was a note attached saying "We wish you the very best and hope you enjoy your gifts" I thought this was a nice thought generally brands don't seem too interested in future watchmakers but it seems IWC dose I know they had some students they was training up. Of course their is some brands who don't employ watchmakers as such but more assemblers or sequential watchmaking. it looks as though their was a lot of thought that went into sending the items out. Thanks IWC :)

Looks like IWC are keeping tabs on future talent as they are no doubt scouring the globe for watchmakers skilled enough to actually slow down their 7 day movements! Or open casebacks on £10k watches without scratching the case!

Sorry Joe - I should keep my IWC bitterness and cynicism under wraps more! Looks like a very nice gift indeed.

Haha no I like to hear the problems as I was hoping one day to own the an IWC with 7 day movement. But I don't want to have to keep repairing it. I take it you didn't have a good experience with IWC?

Thanks everyone for the nice comments and as you all say it was very nice of IWC. But sadly the eye loupe is made of metal and is too heavy to use but still its nice to have on the desk and its good quality.

I couldn't find my original post on this, but here's a link to a thread with a post of mine in it that kind of summarises it -

Incidentally this was before it's timekeeping got worse again (+20 secs), and I got so fed up that I sold it.

That's very nice of them. Either way they'll score you with a job or score with a future customer. :D

Congratulations Joe. What a lovely gift, and by the sounds of it, a real surprise.

That is unacceptable on IWC part especially when you are buying a watch at that price. And also for them to scratch the case back very unprofessional. As we learn in the school not all watchmakers are trained watchmakers sadly. And as their part of a big group it tends to be worse. Its a shame because their watchers are nice looking.

Thanks everyone it was a huge surprise I couldn't believe it because generally brands don't give this many gifts apart from breitling they seem to give gifts out. I would like to get IWC training but I don't think i would just work for them as I have a few brands I would like to get trained on in the future. :)

Absolutely. To be honest, I could deal with the fact that it needed regulation (or a more in depth intervention), as I can accept that occasionally things happen during the manufacturing process. What I couldn't accept was their inability to actually fix it. And to quote one Edmund Blackadder (Lord of Adders Black! ), the scratching of the case was the "crowning turd in the water-pipe". To me that just shows a complete and utter lack of care, and a "that'll do" kind of attitude - both of which are entirely unacceptable from a brand selling luxury, non-essential goods. As a result I can't see myself ever owning another IWC no matter much I like their watches, as I'd be scared to death to ever send it in for a service.

Anyway, that's enough about that! Great gift you had from IWC there, and make sure you keep the watch-making updates coming Joe. They're always a great read.
