Does anyone have any hand wound watches? What is really the purpose, when self winding/automatic watches exist in this day and age. I personally always had an eye on the Portofino but could never understand the concept of winding it every 8 days. Unless of course you don't wear it that often, then it wouldn't really matter.

Well they do offer the Portofino in an auto and an auto chrono, as well as the manual if you want to that route.
I like the idea of having to manually wind your watch, I'm always looking for reasons to play with my watches! ;) However most of the manual wind pieces I've come across are just too dressy for me, so the automatics are usually my go to approach.
If they made a more sporty manual watch from any great company then i might be swayed..

I have a vintage piece that I have wind up. I think it's more of the bond one feels when firing up a timepiece. Personally I love it.

#1 To feel the magic of personally starting to life a wonderful marvel of complex miniature precision machine again & again.

#2 To be mesmerized by the ticking, spinning, rotating internal mechanicals without the distraction of the automatic rotor blocking half of it (assuming you get a display back model)

The portofino 8 day doesn't seem so easy to see even though it has the crystal case back

My Speedy Pro is manual wind. I don't really like to wind the watch everyday (prefer automatics)... However, I wanted the original Speedy Pro, and it is a manual wind watch. If it wasn't for the history of it, I'd go automatic.

I have a couple of hand wind watches. It doesn't bother me to wind them up because most of my watches have stopped by the time I put them on anyway. I tend to rotate watches every few days so I have to wind them when I put them on regardless. I love the look of a manual wind with a display back because you can see the true beauty of the movement. It helps keep the watch a bit thinner too without the rotor.

Go look at the back of a Lemania Cossie SE and then ask that question!

I have a number of manual wind pieces - it's no effort at all.

I have two (2) manual wind watches, Omega Speedmaster Ref 145.012 /67 & Panerai Ref. 183; I personally like it. It sorta reminds me of another time, when life was simpler & kinda liberating - maybe because my manual winds are non-hacking. Not sure if non hacking is a feature of manual watches or not. However, I am not aware of any manual wind watches which hack, maybe Roff can shed some light on the matter?

Cheers,
