While looking for a cheap and cheerful mechanical dress watch, I came across a lovely "original" Chinese brand.

http://www.amazon.com/Stuhrling-Origina ... B005FM83FW

Am I seeing a bit of Breguet mixed with a touch of Cartier and a sprinkle of Patekl? Or is the mushroom producing some side.effects :wowzers ? General feedback isn't half bad if I judge from buyers of this particular model, considering the price point. Accuracy of the Chinese ST-90009 seems to be about 30s / day. Finish looks alright.

Has anyone ever tried one of these? I'm tempted  , how bad can it be? :?

In my earlier days (college) I did purchase a Stuhrling Original Automatic, black dial with orange accents. For the price point ($125) you couldn't go wrong. It was a regular in my rotation. This was about 10 years ago. The watch still runs with no issues to this day. It doesn't get any wrist time anymore and has sat in my watch case for about the last 4 years or so, but it still does run. I have never timed it as for the +/- per day however. For the money I say roll with it. It might leave you longing however every time you look at your wrist for that SOH 46 or that PO in your collection. :D :D This is the same model watch but like I said mine is black with orange.

One of numerous no name Chinese brands, nothing inherently wrong with them but personally I would pay more for a Steinhart or similar brand.

I'm also not seeing Breguet, Cartier or Patek there, just generic Chinese watch.

Though unless I'm missing something, this Chinese watch appears to be Swiss...

Some of their models claim to be swiss made (higher price point), as they just about make the 51% of Swiss parts to be considered so (like a modified Valjoux 7750 movement with added Chinese parts assembled in Switzerland). This one here doesn't quote "Swiss made" on the dial, and the movement is 100% Chinese.

Good point. However, I would wear this one as a dress watch, so theoretically it shouldn't cannibalize the divers... I guess?

Stuhrling Prestige are Swiss made using Claro-Semag 'Swiss' movements. The Claro movements are simply imported (to Switzerland) Chinese Seagull ebauches with decorative finishes added in Switzerland along with assembly.

Ah, they don't make that particularly clear; the website is light on information and there's no page on wikipedia either.

They are intentionally light on information when it comes to the amount of swiss in the watch ha. I had a couple in college before I could afford anything better and I had no complaints at that price point. Just ignore the ridiculous MSRPs.
