Not sure if this is the correct place for this, if not i apologize in advance.
I was curious as to what you guys feel is common practice to making a buyer feel better about purchasing from you..
I was contacted by a potential customer from Australia about a Seawolf I had listed not long ago. He asked me a lot of questions, which I did not mind answering. Then he asked me to copy my ID or passport and send it to him, which I thought was strange being a private sale.
I checked his BS user name and he was a brand new member, his only post was a PM to me about the watch I had for sale.
When I told him I didn't feel comfortable about sending a stranger overseas my personal info, he pasted his LinkedIn account to me and said if it were him he would have bogging to hide, and that it should not be a big deal to make a potential buyer feel safer about the transaction.
This is where I backed out of the transaction, because I didn't feel safe.
I guess my question. Would be should i have sent the info or not?
If I were the buyer purchasing gram a retail store then I would not have second guessed it. But this was a private sale and the buyer had no feedback to offer.
He did however tell me he had over 40 feedback from WUS and TZ, but I'm not a member at those forums.

I don't think I would have copied my ID or Passport and sent it to anyone either. All you can do is provide references from previous deals and answer the questions the best you can.

I think that's excessive. If using Paypal then make sure that it's a verified member and that's all the safeguard that a buyer should need. I wouldn't be sending driver's license or passport information to an anonymous e-mail address / username even if it weren't a new member.

This is what i thought, It was almost as if he were trying to make me feel like I was hiding something by not sending him my ID. I feel better about it now, Its always good to get another neutral opinion.

'Buy the seller' applies equally well to 'buy the buyer'

ok pardon my french but you should tell the guy to F*** himself.

if he wants the watch you can do a couple of things for him to feel better.

1) ask him to request 3 pics of the dial set to date and time that he requests
2) take a pic of the watch beside todays news paper
3) supply references of other people who have bought from you.

as for payment, bank wire only. no wire no watch! that simple.

I was about to type that same thing! No way I'm giving some stranger my ID!

Agree, that's too much info for only a watch transaction. Its unnecessary. Good call on the walking away from it.....

Heck I'm usually happy if somebody even agrees to ship to Australia when I'm buying, and don't push it further than there!

Creepy teritory... :wowzers

I wouldn't do it just because of how prevalent identity theft is nowadays.
