Hey guys im not looking to get screwed so is the safest way to ship a watch to do a bank transfer, wait till funds clear then send the watch?

I have heard horror stories about using paypal and to be honest I really don't feel like paying them if a direct deposit works just as well.

Bank transfers are the safest and you have some recourse with the bank if things go bad. I worked for the Post Office for 23 years and I personally do not buy or sell watches overseas. I have seen the bad on both ends. Some countries are ok while others you avoid both ways. You might get away with it 100 times, it is that 101 time that kills you.
Post Office is by far the safest and most economical of all services out there. Trust me. Some countries however do not allow jewelry (watches) so verify before selling to a foreign country first. Italy and Greece both stopped jewelry and may still be the case.

Can someone explain to me how I can be left accountable if the watch goes missing? If I pay for the insurance and the guy sends me payment and I send the watch out how can anything fall back on me?

What if the guy claims you put pile of dirty laundry in the box or nothing at all - not a watch? He claims the box shows no sign of tampering. Basically his word against you, no? You can't really prove what you put in the box, nor can he prove what was in the box when he/she opened it.

I think at some point you have to convince yourself that both parties on each end are being honest. Once you get past that than any problems have to have come in transit in which case your insurance would hopefully kick in. I'm sure all the shipping companies do their best to deny claims to the extent they can. I think damage during shipping is easier to resolve over items completely missing. Just my $0.02

Totally understand but if its a direct transfer then no one has the capability to take the money back so at best they buyer would have to hope that the insurance kicks in. Ive heard how paypal will put a hold on funds but in this case there is no holding funds once the funds clear the watch will go out.

Can anyone explain the import duty? If there is any that's obviously asked for on the buyers end in his country just like it is here in Canada. The seller is not on the hook for any duty?

Of course not.

If you buy something and import it into the country then you pay duty (assuming that it's subject to duty), nothing to do with the seller.

these threads keep popping up again and again; expensive, cumbersome and highly risky international shipping.

I'm shipping about 1,500 packages per year, high value electronic components and watches, around the globe.

during the last 5 years I had ONE watch stolen during courier transport (parcel cut open and resealed), a minor hassle, but paypal refunded the full purchase price after about 10 days; no shipment lost, though one was misrouted through Australia to Austria (USPS).

paypal is (as close as possible to) perfect for the buyer, as a seller I personally had no negative experience, but do, of course, prefer t/t prepayment.

I do not insure my shipments, the amount saved pays for some very nice watches.

For transcontinental shipments, Fedex is sometimes (quite often actually) cheaper than trackable postal services if you choose Economy, watch shipments to/from the US cost around $50, inside Europe I use GLS, "standard" courier charge for small packages is below 30 Euro.

Of course there are crooks out there, of course shipments get damaged or lost, but the percentage is miniscule.
