Post subject:  What is up with the AP's?
Typically everyone is asking, "what is so good qbout Rolex?". Well, im gonna switch the word from Rolex, to AP. Why are AP's so ridiculously priced? Can someone please explain this to me... What makes them better than other with the outrageous price tag!?

Well part of it is the history of the Royal Oak - a Genta design that at the time it was launched was more expensive in steel than comparable gold models. The quality and fit and finish is exceptional, but design wise I'm with you - I don't see the appeal of the RO or ROO. That's a bit of a generalization with ROO in particular as there are so many variants, but they just don't work for me. Some of the other ranges I like, and the price is reasonable for the quality and comparable brands.

The Royal Oak 15202 I owned had very high-quality finishing. The pricing, new is still ridiculous. I bought mine preowned and the price drops precipitously for such a high-line watch. Once it hits that first year or two old, the price is a lot more palatable, though still high. Probably the prettiest watch I have ever owned, sold it only because too much money in one watch for me. I am still trying to figure out the Offshore, however. I need to spend some time with one in the metal but so far, I'm not into it.

Some of my favorite watches to try on, but I don't think I could ever pull the trigger on one. I've thought a lot about consolidating and buying a 15400 or a Royal Oak Chrono, but at the price point, I'd rather save more and buy a Pate 5167/1A or save a lot more and buy a 5711.

Here are some I've tried on.

Loved the feel of this one, but could never justify it at the price point.

The 15400 was very comfortable and I liked the 41mm size. The bracelet on these is amazing.

The blue dial 15300 looked great, but I still prefer the additional size of the 15400

Probably my favorite Offshore model. I was amazed at how light it felt on the wrist being all titanium.

I loved the red accents on this model.

I'd never wear this, but actually liked the orange on this and the hornback strap.

Interesting thread this; I've never got the AP thing either. The RO doesn't appeal to me - too much border and not enough actual watch, if that makes sense. I've always thought its niche derived from its exceptional recognisability: you see that shape, and it could only be an AP.

It's always a consolation when you don't much like the things you can't afford...

I am with you on this one Tom. Well said.

They don't do anything for me, technology fit and finish aside, and I certainly can't afford one. But even if I could, they would not be on my shopping list.

I like the Offshore models, but for that price I would rather have a Blancpain Fifty Fathom Chrono.

I'm with most of you here. The actual looks does not do a lot for me. However; when I see one, even briefly, it can only be and AP. I can appreciate that someone appreciates them but even if I had that kind of "DI" there is probably 10 others I go with first. I always think the people wearing them must be true "watch guys" as anyone buying a watch just because people would instantly know what it was would most likely be buying a Rolex.

This is when a watch company starts to lose me. Yes, this is a limited watch but who is your market? Surely not the true Shaq fans, they can't pop for 32k. Heck that might be annual salary for many of his REAL fans. Am I getting old? 48....

I used to be one of the guys that didn't quite get it either, until I tried on one of their forged carbon divers through a WIS buddy. I know the forged carbon isn't really new stuff, but AP really IMO perfected this. The case looks amazing.

As others stated, the fit and quality and finish is superb. Yes I can't drop that kind of dough on a single watch just yet, but I wouldn't mind having one or two later in the future.

Asking why APs are so ridiculously priced, is only relative to the person asking and their respective budget. This could be asked of nearly any watch we see here on the forum. How many times have we been told by someone outside these forums that we're crazy for dropping the cash we do for watches?
I buy what my wife allows me to buy. :lol:
I'd been looking at AP for quite some time and finally picked up my first AP last week.

I totally agree with both these posts above. I never used to see the appeal of AP in general and especially the RO and ROO........... until I tried a ROO on. The case-shape suits my wrist size and as others have said, the fit and finish is stunning. That said, most of the rest of the AP range still doesn't do a huge amount for me, but there are a large number of ROO models that I'd have in a heartbeat. Unfortunately I can't afford one right now.... but then as Fagan said, it's all relative.

Just like Rolex, I was initially not interested in the AP line but their models have really grown on me. My favorite are the three hand models. The 15300 & 15400 as well as the diver are just stunning to me. The retail prices are high but second hand prices of these models are relatively more reasonable. Still out of my range but a boy can dream right?

Another thing about the AP's.... I think IMO they have some of th ugliest bracelets, however I love thROO with the rubber.
