Hey folks,

On my continuing effort to unheal myself from being just plain happy with my collection ( ;) ) , I have come across the JD grande seconde all black. Now, it's quite an interesting proposition. Close to perfect design, good size, a pedigree of quality...

But what about the movement? I read it Frederic Piguet, but no more information seems to be available.

So I wonder, is this built just for JD or a modified version of something else?

And what do you guys think of JD in general?

Frederic Piguet technically doesn't exist anymore. It used to be the high end movement house for Swatch but following a corporate restructuring it is now Blancpain's manufacturing arm. As one of the higher end Swatch brands JD gets access to the movements and in that regard it's close to an in house movement - with Blancpain on the dial instead of JD it would be in house.

In terms of the brand, it suffers a lack of awareness in the mass market and that keeps the secondary market a little subdued, but quality is excellent and if you like the designs (personally I do) then they are great pieces. Of the various Grande Secondes I think that I would go for one of the Quantieme models - the new Geneva stripe dial models are very nice.

The simple Dress Watches seem to be reasonable. The Seule Aiguille reminds me of a Meister Singer single hand. Nomos comes to mind as well. Hard to assess without seeing one.

By way of contrast, the Grande Seconde is elaborately decorated. Reductivism it ain’t.

Phoenix brand, part of Swatch Group. They do create some interesting complications, and appear to have been given a good sized budget to get high end timepieces out to market.
