Hi All,

It's been quite a while since I've posted on or even read the forum - I am happy to be back and am even happier to see the same old griping going on around here

I decided to take a break from the forum after my mother's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in November of last year - over the last six months I've spent every spare minute with her, aiding in her treatment and care. Last week she lost her battle and I am devastated, to say the least. My mother and father have both been taken far too early by cancer, a truly terrible scourge on humanity.

With that being said, I am glad to begin the healing with some talk about watches and to attempt to rejoin, in my small way, the community here.

As part of her personal possessions, my mother had an Elgin pocket watch. I've taken some photos and am hoping the gang can give me a bit of information on the watch

If the watch is genuine, I have surmised that this is from 1911 (based on serial number on movement and a website) but don't have much beyond that. It runs very well and may have been serviced in the past (the sticker seems to indicate a date of 10/98) Just looking to know a bit more about the piece - have no intention to sell. This will be a nice reminder of my mother's life.

Thanks very much for any help you can give here and looking forward to boning up on all the latest developments in the world of watches in the coming months.

I can't help you with the info, but my condolences on your mother passing. Mine has terminal cancer also so I know the journey you have been on all too well.

Best wishes

Jim

Ian,

So much that I want to say, so little that I can find the words for. Be at peace that your Mom's suffering is at an end and I hope that the good memories can help you to work through the pain. You are in my thoughts.

The watch is a perfectly correct Elgin and as you note it dates from 1911. It's a stem wind, and looks to be stem set which makes sense for the relatively late production. I'm assuming that it's fairly small as it was your Mom's and from that 3/4 plate movement layout I'm guessing that it's a Size 0 Model 2. Can't tell you much about the hunter case because these were selected separately from the watch.

Ian, while it's genuinely great to see you back, I just wish it was under happier circumstances for you personally. My sincerest condolences for your loss, and I hope the pain eases a little as quickly as possible for you.

In terms of that lovely pocket watch, you've been here long enough to know that I know absolutely nothing about classic pieces! But it's a beautiful looking thing.

Cancer indeed sucks. Lost my grandmother a few years back too. My sincerest condolences. And indeed a beautiful pocketwatch to remember her by.
