Golly, Urquhart looks rather old in that pic...

Btw, is that just a show display or is there really a no date PO in the pipeline? That thing looks sweet.

Omega just love spending their hard-earned on high-profile celebs.

I don't know if they're all still on their books, but they've had a ludicrous number of celebs over the years - George Clooney, Michael Schumacher, Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, Ellen McArthur, Michael Phelps, Anna Kournikova, Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman, Eugene A. Cernan, Buzz Aldrin, Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Zhang Ziyi...... I'm sure there's more.

Cernan and Aldrin are the only two from that list that I think are worth the money. Maybe Craig and Brosie too for the Bond connect, but frankly who cares if Nicole Kidman or George Clooney wear Omegas? Nothing against them personally, but they're totally irrelevant in terms of watches.

Probably the same people who care about what new handbag or dress Nicole wore to the Academy Awards event and can not wait to run to their local boutique the next day to get a similar one.
To them it is just another upmarket fashion accessory rather than a fine piece of craftsmanship with heritage as viewed by most of us boring WISes here ;-)
Sad but true and that is what advertising is thriving on.

I am not Condoning this type of marking, personally it puts me off the brand.
Even more so in this case as I am neither a fan of Omega or McIlory.

It's mind boggling how Nike could recoup the 125m$ on he's 10 year contract.

No info on the omega contract yet.

Oh I completely agree with you ; I just think it's utterly ludicrous how many ambassadors Omega have.... not to mention their choices. I like Omega a lot as a brand, but their choices seem to be nothing more than a "who's hot at the time of signing".

Pre-Beckham  , I always thought Breitling had it pretty much on the money when it came to ambassadors... given that all "serious" manufacturers seem to "need" them. John Travolta was quite an inspired choice IMO. Love him or hate him, he's an instantly recognisable mega-star, but also an aviation nut of biblical proportions. And Herbert Nitsch - free-diver and pilot : again an inspired choice IMO.

Then they go and spoil it by hiring Bling-Boy Beckham. Still, I guess that fits with their more fashion statement direction these days as opposed to being an instrument for professionals.

+1 Agree, although I still think Breitling has a greater range of functional 'instruments' than most other brands.

Since he should no longer wear them, I'd be happy to take a couple of Rory''s APs off his hands.

Difficult to imagine this wasn't a move inspired by money given that AP make better watches than Omega.

I think you have to add Michael Phelps to that list, and to a slightly lesser-extent Norman and Garcia. Genuine sports stars who someone will no doubt take interest in what they wear. I agree in general - nothing against them personally but who cares what watch they are paid to wear. Marketing dollars hard at work.

Ho hum. I could care less about watch ambassadors. The fewer the better. Now if we could just cut loose Beckham.

The astronaut endorsement makes sense in continuing the legend of the moon missions and the Speedy because, after all, we haven't been there now in 40 years. The Bond product placement and using the Bond actors made them a ton of money and sold a ton of watches. Like it or not, these were and remain smart endorsements. The rest, I kind of doubt it. To me, Rory was the response to Rolex signing Tiger. The PO is in my mind marketed as "the alternative" to a sub.

Good analysis Scott. And I'll have to fight you for his APs.
