what do you think about the choices ?

Hmm.

I think that I would have a Cartier Tank on the list over the Santos and I'm not sure that the Datejust would be so high (if there at all). I would have the Navi higher, but objectively it's probably about right.

Not too much to argue with for me.

the El Primero would have made my list.

It's a pretty decent list. Don't really have nothing to say.

Yeah that's fair - replace the Datejust with an El Primero.

I think it is a pretty good list of actual classics. Agree on the Tank vs Santos, and and maybe a Big Pilot in place of the GO, but other than that spot on. Might not be the actual watches I would choose but you cant argue with the provenance of any of these.

Overall a good list. I also thought Tank instead of Santos but no real disagreement. I do agree on putting in the El Primero but I think the Datejust belongs. I get the thinking behind the "representative of German aviators" watch but since the GO seems plucked out as a default choice I'm not sure it belongs in the list. You could make the same argument for a diver compressor watch of the late 50s, early '60s, but I don't think there's a consensus of who was first or the most iconic. You could pick a JLC, Longines, or something similar but I don't think that's the point of the list.

As good a list as any. I saw comments on the site crying out for a Patek, maybe the Calatrava, but not the Nautilus. To me, just about any Breguet is a living legend.

I agree and even though it is unpopular as a choice, my choice only, I would get rid of the AP. I know it is iconic, but I just do not care for it.

Not bad. Maybe to many divers but id swap the GO with a Fifty Fathoms.

Seiko should be there IMO.

I agree with most of the list, but I'd change a few things.

1. Definitely get rid of the Datejust. One Rolex on the list is enough. This could be replaced by a Panerai.
2. I like the choice of the Portuguese, but not the chrono version. I think the in-house Portuguese Automatic should be on the list instead.
3. The GO would not have made my list. I'd probably put a Big Pilot in its place . . . and then get rid of the Portuguese above for a Patek Philippe.

Hmm, I'd have to agree with this based on the fact that all of these designs have been around and available pretty much forever. The only ones missing are the GMT Master, the Daytona and perhaps the Expy I.. But that would have been a bit many Rolexes.

The GO will probably have been chosen because its german and Lange-ish... Even though GO didn't exactly exist back when Lange made pilot watches. I think, as little as I like it, the IWC big pilot would be the better choice there.

And I'd add a second category for the modern day classics:

A Panerai (only really available to the mere mortal since '93 and not that 'old' to be honest), an Omega SMP (it has been the emblematic Bond watch in more recent years and is an icon of the 80ies/90ies), a 1000 Miglia (after all, that got the whole tire-strap thing started for good) and perhaps a Hublot (which as little as I might want one, has become an iconic design in recent years).

The original Chronomat might also qualify in this category, but then, it might as well have changed its shape too considerably over the years to really have become an emblematic design. It is an iconic name for sure, but not necessarily an iconic look.

I'd agree with the brands (mostly), but not necessarily all the models. There's one too many Rolexes in there - I'd bin the Datejust from the list and put an El Primero-powered Zenith in there instead. I'd have a different JLC to the Reverso (purely because I can't stand that model), and even though it rarely tells the time accurately I'd put the BP in there instead of the Portuguese despite the Portuguese's heritage. I'd also swap the GO for a Lange, or a Patek. I'd keep the Santos over the Tank though.

I would have thought the PP Calatrava would have been in the list.
