14 microns hardly seems thick enough to be resilient but I am sure that they have done many tests and this may represent Genesis for a whole new way of regulating time - amazing.

yeah, DRIE worked silicon is going to really have an impact on the industry. UN have been doing some exciting things for a while but the technology is now starting to get to the point where it can scale. It's going to be a while before DRIE silicon can address things like the upcoming hairspring shortage, but it's getting there.

Though 'need' is pretty subjective. No one 'needs' a watch with 28 jewels and a constant escapement either - though looking at that link, I do now... Damn you Fred!

You are right, Tom; of course nobody needs a constant escapement, a tourbillion, a new concept for a chaine fusee - and I am actually happy that Breitling seems (fingers crossed, they f***ed up royally with the Unitime) close to launching a watch that makes many brand enthusiasts happy, no disrespect meant.

Still, it would be nice to see Breitling working on relevant horological innovations, calling a movement "the best chronograph in the world" just isn't enough.

Repairs would be undertaken back at GP Headquarters, no doubt? On that, does anyone know the shock absorption take up of the 14 micron chassis?

I am slowly catching up on this. I assume that the idea of a Constant Force Escapement is nothing new, but the method of achieving it is, in the case of the GP design.

I believe Rolex and IWC also have a CFE but in the case of the Rolex version, I can't find anything to support that.

Would that be correct, or am I wrong?

Constant force is certainly not new - dates back to chain and fusee movements in the 1800s (in fact Lange used it on their chain and fusee from a few years ago), but not common these days as it's unnecessary in most watches - usually more an issue in longer power reserves - like IWC. Not aware of a Rolex version but many watchmakers have one or more constant force escampements in their in house movement collection.

This way of achieving it is not just different from those, it's game changing in the approach - revolution not evolution.

Yes, that’s what I thought. You know, I really worry about a 14micron wire oscillating like it does and not breaking. I hope the technology is not restricted by this innovation and that it becomes a victim of unknown characteristics. Time will tell I guess.

I know it probably won’t and that GP have make the call based on tests, but still. It’s awfully awkward in operation and I am wondering if it’s an elegant solution. Seems to be struggling to achieve its purpose.
