Ah, that narrows it down :-)

If you read it backwards and slow it down it sounds like "Buy an Invicta"

Could Be Roff. But there again it would be drawing a long bow to associate Invicta with doing anything simple. :)

Perhaps you meant Swatch! :uplaugh:

It has been a while since I last posted. Thanks everyone for your input and insight. I still have yet to make a purchase.

I found this IWC Portofino on Ebay.

What would everyone value this watch at? What would a fair offer be?

Portofino is an excellent choice.

Thanks, mrcheatle. Any insight into a fair price to offer for this watch, considering it is "used".

I'll throw my support in for FC. I have the black dial Automatic Slimline, but either of these seem like they would meet your criteria.

The FAQs recommend checking completed sales on eBay (the green prices in the completed listings) and dealer asking prices on Chrono24. Those really are the best sources for current pricing.

I am extremely liberal about what I find acceptable for dress. I've worn a Steelfish with a black suit. Even a Bentley. But.....if my goal is to buy a "dress watch," then my mind goes to a 3 hand, not a Chrono, thinner rather than thicker, clean classic lines, uncluttered dial, strap alone or strap/bracelet option. There are some rather nice pieces pictured above, but the one I'm most impressed with is thomasenlow1's AT - that watch is so sweet.

Or you may consider FC where you can get a classic style with a true in house movement for about $2500 -

I'm with Tom on this one. At around 2.5K for a nice dress watch FC are hard to beat.

:yeahthat

Personally I'mnot really a dress watch kind of guy, but FC fits the bill for me very nicely. I also agree that an Omega AT, when put on a quality croco strap, can also be quite dressy in appearance.... and a damn fine watch too.

I do see that one of our dealer/sellers posted a three-hand white dial Portofino yesterday.

I purchased my first Breitling Chrono last year, super ocean A13340. I now have two "sport" watches and want to make my next purchase a "dress" watch.

When I was going through the research process last year for my chronograph, my final choice came down to the watch that I visually found most appealing. However, when looking at dress watches I feel they all look very much the same, which makes finding the absolute best maker at my budget my goal for this thread.

I am looking to spend under $5,000. Obviously I would prefer something in the 2k-3k range but if a lot more overall value can be obtained by streching up to 5k I am willing.

Right now I'm thinking an automatic with a white or silver face. I ultimately would like to be able to purchase both a black and brown strap that I could change up when I wanted.

I appreciate the help and look forward to everyone's opinions.

Thanks,
Michael

Good thing you set the rules for that  Dress watches are typically smaller and understated. Like black or white tie, it isn't really a matter of opinion as to what's acceptable. If we really want to get picky, the most formal application is no watch at all. A smaller piece with a steel or black leather band is ideal. Also, are we talking suit and tie or true formal? The difference is significant.

Negotiate an Air King to below 5. Might be over after tax but talk about a versatile piece for comparatively not much dough.

Evidently it is a matter of opinion, unless there is a definitive code out there. Black tie and white tie are clearly defined. Dress watch is a broad category. I certainly wouldn't wear a diver with my black tux(except a Sub). Short of truly formal dress, "the times they are a changing" when it comes to watches. But, see my earlier post.

It's funny when people think it's a matter of opinion as to what is appropriate for true formal dress. Everything is a matter of opinion of course until one is told they look a fool. The rules are out there; whether you choose to abide by them is only limited by how you wish to be perceived.

I think the issue is the definition of formal. Many guys think they're being formal if they slap on a suit and tie. That isn't what I'm discussing.
