Had a pal ask me today to help him locate a work watch. He is looking for a 24H dial since the warehouse he works in operates on military time an if possible something with some resistance to cold since he is in and out of deep freezers going into sub zero temps.

He wants to stay under $500, so my question to the forum is if there are any brands I am not considering. So far I am thinking Lum-Tec, Fortis (used) and maybe even a Gshock.

He is not concerned with auto vs quartz, but I do think he prefers analog.

Secondly would a quartz perform better in sun zero temps than an auto or would the difference be negligible?

Does it have to be a 24 hour main dial or can a GMT function work? That will open up a lot more brands - Steinhart for example. H3 Tactical do one that will be close to $500 if you shop around.

In terms of mechanical vs. quartz - cold will affect both to some extent, but not a practical impact - the watch will be fairly stable temperature wise as it's on the wrist when outside I would assume!

After talking to him tonight he really prefers the pure 24H dial as opposed to a GMT or even and inner 24 ring.

I did find this Lum-Tec Combat B11 that I like and think he will too, at least if he put a proper strap on it, but I also sent him somne links to a russian brand Aviator. These are manual winds, and I dont think would would be near as capable in a rough work environment as the lime-tec, which will be spot on timing wise, and maintenance free with free battery changes from the company. All said and done I think it is a good deal for a quartz within his specifications.

PS Thanks for the advice on the low temp capabilities. He was more worried about that than anything.

I've absolutely no knowledge of them but for something different, have a look at Raketa. Russian and "made for polar explorers, pilots, cosmonauts and submariners." €500-700 or a tenth of that for a NOS one on eBay.

How about an ABC watch? It will even tell him how cold he is in the work environment (probably does not need to know it thought; if your cold, your cold). What about a Sector Mountain Master?

Great watch, nice balance and good display. Digital readout for 24 hour time as well as analogue time.
