I am shocked at what a quality quad winder is running these days and so I have enbarked to find the parts nessasary to make my own winder. If anyone knows a site/source that sells low RPM motors and adjustable voltage timers, ect... Please let me know. I would really like to have a quad (although I only have use for a dual ..... at the moment!)

I would need the ability to go both directions and have rest periods after winding. I might be just wishing that I can find thses parts, but thought I would ask.

Anyway, share you ideas on finding the parts and such. I am pretty good at woodworking so the "box" would be made of wood.

Scott

Basically I would like to buy the "guts" of an Orbita Quattro (or similar) and build my own box. I got to get the cost down, cause I would rather spend my money on another watch than a darn winder.

You could try this place -

http://www.watch-tool.de/shop.php

I found this place a few days ago and quite liked the idea of building a cabinet myself. Still not cheap, but better than some of the boxes out there....

I guess the question always will be - do you trust your DIY capability and save a few lousy bucks to create something that will take care of your precious watch?

(And just in case that sounded patronizing, the answer for myself would be... Yes, I trust my DIY techniques. :) )

Not only do I trust my DIY capibilities, but I cant fathom paying $1500+ for a good quad winder. (rock and a hard place) I am basically researching this because I would assume that the majority of the price of these winders is because of the craftmanship of the "box". When time allows I am going to look over that site and see what is included in the "kit". Then I can construct a real nice curly maple or quarter sawn oak or black walnut box to house the mechinism.

Scott

Heck if its possible to buy the "guts" that are of good quality at a really discounted price....hmmm maybe I will make several for sale. We will see how the 1st one turns out, if it even gets built!

Don't know if this floats your boat or not.

Interesting anyway:

Maybe you could do something with it!

That thing looks dangerous!!

Depending on how 'rustic' you want to go in your construction all you really need is an electric motor with a timer and some kind of gearing mechanism (chain and cogs?).

May get slightly more complex if you need to wind some clockwise and others anti clockwise, but gear wheels can solve that.

I'm using Underwood winders and I'm certainly not paying for a fancy outside - it just isn't there... I beleive (and hope) what I'm paying for is the electronics/mechanics inside and the relaiability of the winder.

Have you looked into these?

http://www.orbita.com/pages/12160.htm

I'm thinking about using one of these motors for my prototype, but an employee at my AD had referred another model. I'll have to do more research into the other motor.
