With the expected arrival of a new member our family just about 5 weeks away, I've been tossing around the idea of buying a watch and having all the paperwork put in his name and have them dated on the actual birthday. The thought would be then to give the watch to him down the road on some sort of milestone, i.e. college graduation, wedding, etc. It would most likely be a Rolex, either a Sub or GMTIIc, and I'd be wearing it until the day it's handed over. In order to do this though, I'd have to sell my Cartier and probably my IWC which I can probably live with. I'm just curious to know if anyone else has done something like this.

I've not heard of that, but........

I think that is an amazing idea, and you have the right kind of watch in mind - a timeless classic.

Bought a GMT IIc and had the card dated on the day of my daughter's birth....and surprisingly I haven't sold it nor will I and will be given to her when I'm old an grey. I sold two Breitling's to make that happen.

Wonderful idea. Makes me wish I'd been into watches when my kids were born. Best wishes.

This is when kids are handy.

Awesome idea... by then kids will be in flying cars and going on summer vacation to Mars but they'll (meaning Serge's daughter and yours Justin) be the cool kids with their father's "analog" Rolex on their wrist to tell time instead of looking at their iPhone 5000.

More power to you, I was figuring out how to pay for formula, diapers and a bigger house when my kids were born. It's a cool idea, though I have partly been down that road. My old GMT was going to be passed down until my son told me he wasn't that interested in it (though he already had an Omega with case engraving for his 16th birthday, which he babies). Buying it on the day of birth might be just the thing to keep your child and you committed. No question, a Sub or GMT would be right for this. Congrats in advance.

You sir, are the kind of father we should all be so blessed to have. Congrats on the new addition to the family, and I hope that you both wear whatever you choose in good health and for many years.

great idea justin. i think that your kid will love the sentiment when he is older. plus to be completely honest the Rolex will be way more valuable than the other 2 pieces.

Will talk to Mrs. Wessa if she would be interested in another baby :-)

You're just trying to find an excuse to buy that planet ocean. I really appreciate everyone's thoughts on it and you've basically convinced me. I'll be calling George in the morning to see what my options are. The Deepsea is probably the only other watch I'd consider. I'm already picking up a Datejust 2 later this year so the Sub and GMT make for the logical choice.

The Deepsea would have been my preference. Size wise that is + I don't like the magnification on the date on the others.

I'm just trying to picture the scene - your wife in the delivery room and you down at the watch shop. Her breathing to order, screaming, shouting, swearing, cursing you, demanding ever stronger meds and you sat calmly awaiting the all important call so you know whether to point at the blue-dialled one or the pink-dialled one.

I know if I'd tried that, I'd spend the rest of my life sleeping in the shed.

Nice idea though if you can get away with it, but (and this is a big but) to my mind you really ought to wrap it up nicely and put it in the safe rather than wearing it so when they get it it's their age and new - either buy yourself a watch on their birth date as a constant reminder or buy them a watch on their birth date as a gift for later. Just my $0.02.

Just thinking what might be cool would be to buy two identical watches, bought together. You wear yours and put theirs away. Don't mention the day you bought it or the existence of the second watch, but simply tell your child that you'll give them "the" watch when they turn 21 (or whatever).

On the chosen date, you give them their "new" timecapsule watch and then tell them of the significance.

Cue lots of tears, hugging & general family joy.

Of course, based on the amount of money I had spare when my child was born, the discussion at their 21st would have most likely have gone along the lines of "look, Minnie and Mickey are waving at each other"

The thought of buying 2 watches is a great idea, but that's not an option at the moment. I'm going with the Sub and got it all figured out with George today.
