I wrote this same question to the Omega formu, but I wanted your opinnion too.

I'm planning to by my second watch. The first of mine is Breitling SCO and it is just great but I'd like to have an open mind and now I'm dreaming of an Omega.

Since I am a real neebie with omegas I'd like to hear your opinnions about Seamaster Diver Chronometer with black dial, steel case and steel braclet. (2254.50.00) Is it a worth of money?

I will dive with the watch, I want it to be with automatic movement and it has to have a simple dial (since I allready have a B ;) ). So should I go with that or is there some other options?

Hi Fox, I've owned a couple of Omies in the past, one of which was the more common "Bond" style Seamaster (Ref 2531.80.00). The model you are looking at is essentially the same (even though it has a different colour bezel, dial and bracelet!)

Anyway in terms of value for money, then I think they represent a fantastic buy. My Seamaster kept superb time, and had an incredibly smooth movement. However, Omega bracelets (and IMHO, the build in general) never strikes me as being quite as good as Breitling, but then you get what you pay for.... and you always pay a bit more for a B! The Omie bracelets are also pin linked instead of screws, which again IMHO looks a bit cheap in comparison. The other thing is that the Seamaster has become a bit of a victim of it's own success. Walk down any high street, go into any bar or pub and you can guarantee you will see someone sporting a Seamaster of some description at some point. Exclusive they most certainly ARE NOT!

Having said that, the reason they are so popular extends further than just the, frankly tedious, Bond connection : they are popular because they are just very classic looking and damn good watches. (And yes, you will be able to dive with it just fine!)

You can't go wrong with an Omega Seamaster Pro... the design is classic and it looks good on everyone, hwoever its a bit thin for my tastes.. having worn Breitlings for a long time its hard to get used to the Seamaster, so I prefer the Seamaster Chrono.

Go for it, the watch is a good deal. Omega is planning to change all Seamasters to CoAxial movements in the next years, so the prices will rise substantially in the near future.

Admin,

You are correct all the current models of SMP are outfitted with the new Co-axial movement and as noted the prices have gone up. I believe you can still find the odd non co-axial version in the AD channel.

I've had my SMP for about 8 years now and absolutely love it for it's classic design and comfort.

I currently have my eye on a 45mm Planet Ocean or Railmaster.

The 2254 and the other models, which have not the exact "Bond" look are still on the basis of the old movement. But Omega will change the rest to Coaxial movements.

Doesn't Omega put power reserve indicators on many models? If so that would be a really compelling feature for me.

example: Seamaster racing chrono

PS: I also have a SMP and agree it sits much lower.. maybe some day that will be the "in" look again and hulking chronos will get thinner;)

I think some of the Deville's have a Power Reserve indicator.. if you're asking if that Seamaster Chrono has a power reserve (the dots) then they are not.. those are a Regatta timer I believe.

yes, I actually found it very confusing looking for a definition of that dial on omegawatches.com... this one doesn't list regatta as a feature, isn't a chrono, but has the same thing.. (mind you it has "apnea timing" which could be similar [it has the buttons for something...?? 14-min timer is unrelated/bezel feature)..

Apnea has to do with breathing.. i know some people that suffer from sleep apnea or something like that where they need a breather for when they sleep... but i really have no idea what an apnea timer is.

I think the 14-minute timer is what that is.. not only is the bezel counted to 14 minutes, but there are 7 dots, and each one probably counts for 2 minutes. The regatta timer has 5 dots, each dot is 2 minutes as well. It says its for "free-diving".. not sure what that is.

Bit of a tangent, but free-diving is sport whereby people go down to some pretty awesome depths and/or for extended periods of time without any breathing apparatus. They wear a mask and fins... and that's about it. The world champ - a lady called Tanya Streeter - can hold her breath for over 6 minutes, and has dived to something around the 160m mark if I remember rightly. (Don't ask me how I know this stuff!)
