AFAIK they run the same movement as the Submariner (the 3135) so IMO there's not a lot to choose between them apart from aesthetics and the WR rating : the YM is 100m WR compared to 300m on the Subbie. I also believe the YM is a fraction thinner than the Subbie too.

But that's really about it.

The YM was the first Rolex that ever caught my eye. I even owned a fake one when I was like 16-17 years old. Its not particularly appealing to me any more, but its still a nice watch. I much prefer the YMII; its just a shame its not available in SS.

I owned a Yacht for a wonderful but short time, only trading it to get my AP Royal Oak Jumbo. It's a beautifully detailed piece, and the platinum bezel and dial in the same color gave it a larger appearance than 40mm. A little thinner than the Sub but with the same large crown, the respective weighting of case and bracelet is the best I have experienced with a Rolex. It was a very comfortable wear. The brushed/stainless/platinum mix of surfaces on case and bracelet were excellent, and that bracelet has a raised surface on the center link where it met with the case that I absolutely loved, just beautiful curvature. I think only the newer Daytonas have that same shape but I don't recall the setup on the new DJII and GMT-C. Worked great as a dress or informal watch. My only reservation is that the gray/silver coloration is not quite as versatile as a white or black dial for me. That said, if my AP hadn't come along I'd still own it and would have probably kept it. Great watch.

I'm glad Rolex is finally updating the bracelets and clasps on the YM. The main YM section on the Rolex website is still showing the old lineup, but the Baselworld section shows updated versions in the blue and platinum dials. I'm not typically big on silver dials, but the sand-blasted platinum is something else again; the blue sunray finish is also nice. Very nice watches, I must say.

Additionally, the case is a steel/platinum alloy. Rolex calls is Rolesium. (The bracelet is steel only.) I don't know what this means in terms of hardness. Platinum is softer than steel (although harder than gold), so I would guess a Rolesium case would be more prone to scratches than pure steel, but I don't know that for sure.

Also, the bezel is not a true "diver's" bezel, insofar as it is bidirectional and lacking lume. This would seem to be in keeping with the fact the WR is 100m. Evidently the Yachtmaster is meant to be worn while floating on the water, not while under it.

Well, now I'm not sure about what I said. The brochure for the 2012 models* says the case material is Rolesium, which they describe as a "combination of 904L stainless steel superalloy and platinum." They list the bezel as "Bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated in platinum." At first glance, it seems like Rolex is saying the case material is an actual alloy of platinum and steel, since they say the "case" material is Rolesium, and since they list the bezel itself as platinum. However, here's what Wikipedia says: "In 1997, Rolex released the Yacht-Master in Rolesium, a term patented by Rolex in 1932 which gives the Yacht-Master a stainless steel and platinum construction; the bezel and dial are platinum, while the case, band, crown, etc. are stainless steel."

So now I'm not sure. Does anybody know? Is Rolesium just a fancy term for a steel case with a Platinum dial and bezel?

*Note that the PDF is a bit slow to download, even on high speed connections.

My understanding was steel case, platinum dial and bezel.

I'm thinking you're right, and if so, I just got duped by Rolex's marketing. Why not just say it has a steel case with a platinum dial and bezel? Why make up a fake name for it, and word its description so ambiguously as to give people the wrong impression?

At any rate, sorry for misleading you, Joe. Seems you were right from the outset. I still like the watch, for whatever that's worth.
