Not sure many people would expect me to post about a Chanel watch! However, I had a chance to try this watch on Friday - http://www.chanel.com/en_US/Watches/exc ... horlogerie

I have to say it's very nice. The matte finish really tones it down and works well with the gold. The case and bracelet are all ceramic and the butterfly deployant has a patented spring closing that really makes it feel nice and secure. Movement is an AP base with ceramic and gold rotor.

The price is 'optimistic' for a watch carrying this label - $23,500 which suggests to me a watch for the Chanel crowd rather than the WIS, and the bracelet is too thin for the watch, but it's a serious indication that these guys are making a run at becoming a player in the serious watch space - much like Montblanc have already done. Chanel already outsells Montblanc in terms of total watch sales, but most of these are the ladies quartz pieces.

I have to think that this watch would get a lot more respect if it had a different name on the dial.

Very nice, black and gold can work really well on some pieces. Quite restrained for a Chanel piece as well as using some nice materials. Definitely not a beater......

I'm sure the AP movement has a bit to do with the price as well. The other automatics, last I checked, were basic ETAs. I think I still have access to the Chanel pieces through a rep I know, at the rep's discount which is pretty healthy. For that style in a base automatic, though, the list prices were up there, maybe in Omega range IIRC.

They're definitely going upmarket. Was speaking with the Canadian rep and he was very clear that they are planning to go truly in house, and they already own G&F Chatelain which produces all of the ceramic cases for Bell & Ross among others. You're reight that most are currently ETA and I think that their tourbillons are Renaud et Papi.

And they have a VERY strict "no discount" policy with their ADs. But it is a nice looking watch. I'm surprised.

I believe that watch comes free with the purchase of a bottle of perfume at Macy's right? :poke:

It's pretty good looking actually.

Interesting.

Asked the AD what kind of price I would have to pay in front of the Chanel rep and he suggested that he would work with me when I was ready to buy.

Maybe different distributors have different policies. Was at one of my ADs for their Watch Days and all the reps were there. In fact it was when I was looking for a watch for my daughter. They were showing me the Chanels and I asked about the discount. I was told Chanel did not discount. I didn't make the connection that the tall blonde behind the counter was the rep. I said, "how on earth do they stay in the watch business." At that point the rep pivoted and said, "we don't discount and we do just fine,SIR!". Ouch.

I got my kid a Chopard.

looks nice, but I don't know if I want a timepiece on my wrist that's got a name associated with women's high fashion...
