i hate to ask this on a breitling forum...but i trust the members.....i am considering purchasing a pre-owned 300m chronograph. is omega quality as good as breitling? resale value? thanks!!!

I would say Yes, Omega are made as good as Breitling. The Professional clasps are much nicer than Breitlings pressed steel or titanium ones, but not always as secure! I do hate the pin & sleeve bracelet links though. A used Omega may have one or two faulty pins that need replacement. I managed to get one OEM pin for the princely sum of £8 gbp from eBay :guns:

The bezels are tight as they should be, and lume is good - but the single AR treatment on the crystal may not to be a Breitling lovers' favour. I've had a few Omegas and none has crown stripping issues, all keeping perfect time too.

The 300m Chrono Diver is a hefty piece! Although only about 42mm it is about 16mm thick, its curved caseback makes the watch sit higher than your Steelfish, for example.

Depreciation is about the same. It depends on how popular the model is. Looking around the dealers, a 42mm Planet Ocean goes quicker than a 45mm XL for the same price. IMHO Omegas generally retain a classic styling that ages well....unlike some Breitlings.

In general I have to admit, we have a lot more reclamations with Omega watches, than with Breitling, although we sell more Breitling. But most of these reclamations concerne ladies automatic watches (which Breitling does not offer).

As an owner of both brands, I would say quality is about the same. I would give Omega a small plus-up for their in-house movements and relative innovation; however, Breitling seems to be on the move with more in-house movements. Re-sale value between both brands is about the same. Plan on 60% of MSRP for pre-owned models with demand.

I have a PO XL and a Blackbird and in my opinion the fit and finish between the two is equal. My PO is a tank, took a tee ball bat right to the crystal and no problems. I love both of them and would recommend either brand to anyone.

I'm not too familiar with the SMP's but from everything I've read they're outstanding watches, I've actually thought of picking up a SMP also and will definitely be getting a Speedy Pro in the future.

I have a PO XL and a transocean chronograph B01. The Omega is one of the toughest watches I have ever owned and the style and finish is every bit as good as a Breitling. Omega may have the leg up when it comes to styling that stands the test of time but I love both watches.

No need to be embarrassed to ask about Omegas here; there are a number of Omega fans on this forum, and some of us actually like them better than Breitling. Anyway, I echo the sentiments of most others in this thread: Omegas are very well made, and hold their resale value about as well as can be expected for a non-Rolex. Buy with confidence, and wear it proudly.

4+ omegas (still own a speedy pro) and 4+ Breitlings, and IMHO, the Breitlings are superior in several ways - the bracelets, the ability to adjust with micro adjustments, the crystals - I'd give the edge to Breitling. My Crosswind Special is the smoothest running chronos I have, much more so than my speedy.

However, there is one are where Omega beats Breitling by a mile - their parts are widely available for 3rd party watchmakers. You can buy new crystals, links, other parts from O Frei for most Omegas, but with Breitling you are stuck working through them....it really limits you when it comes to service, especially if you may need a part.

I love my Omega SM Chronograph, it's not as often seen as the standard "James Bond" without the Chrono functions, which is a plus in my book. As Roman and Guy mentioned, they are tanks...would make a great weapon if you had to throw something at someone in a pinch :guns: but seriously great piece and I think you will really like the finish and fit once you try one on. The lumes are also very nice and stay charged for a good period of time. Good luck with your purchase and be sure to let us know how it went.

And on the secondary market I think they offer some excellent value for the money. Nice chrono by the way Montexn!

This is the one thing that truly bugs me about Omega - at best you get half link and that's it. (I did have one Speedy - a Schumaker I think, that had a two position micro-adjustment in the claps. Would be nice to see that on the rest of the bracelets).

Granted, that doesn't give as wide a range of adjustability as on Breitling's clasps, and most (if not all) other Omega models don't have any adjustability in the clasps at all. Still, it's at least worth noting - if you get a Speedie, you will have some micro-adjustment capability.

As others have said the one point I'd give Breitling the edge in is their bracelets. My Blackbird bracelet was amazing, felt like it would last a lifetime. The SMP's and PO's that I've tried on on a bracelet didn't compare to the BB bracelet IMHO, That being said I'm not a big bracelet guy, that's why I sold it, so it didn't bother me too much.

I had two current Speedies. One had 2 adjustments and the other had none.

OK...well, I stand corrected. All the Speedies I've seen have had micro-adjustment clasps. Evidently not all of them do, though.
