Post subject:  Looking at Panerai

I currently wear a 2010 Avenger and am now thinking of purchasing a Panerai. I love their looks, but I don't know a whole lot about Panerai.
I know I would like to get one for under 6k. I like something that has a date on it and I also like the sandwich dials. What's the best Panerai for this sort of price range?
I would be looking for a pre owned one (with box and papers) and I see a lot of nice ones between 4500-5500 but I have no idea what I'm looking at.

Thanks in advance!

You can always go with one of the historic Base Luminors... 000, 112, 219 (left crown) are some of the ref numbers that come to mind... but none of them will have the date. I noticed on average the ones with date function will cost a bit more. Not much of a Paneristi so not so knowledgeable. Check out the sister site paneraisource.com and the models section for a better look.

With the criteria you listed above I would say a preowned 312 would be your best choice. You aren't going to find one for $4,500-$5,500, but if you can go a little higher then you would be able to acquire one.

I would heavily suggest that you go try some on at a local Panerai AD before you make any decisions. The standard Luminor case (like the 000, 111, etc) wear very different from the 1950 style Luminor case (like the 312, 233, etc).

Good luck...and happy hunting!

What is the one that has something that looks like a lock on top of the crown? What's the purpose of that?

Thanks guys! Yes, I have tried on a few different models ( even ones a little out of my range). I'm debating getting a Panerai, or the Navi World on croc. A new Navi World I can get new at my AD for 5500.00.

The PAMs I like that I can afford are the 88 and the 48. I think I lean more towards the 48.

I know where you can get a pre-owned Pam 287 for $5580 or $5500 can't recall the exact price. By the way I get nothing out of it other than the satisfaction of helping the would be buyer and seller & most of all that a Pam is going to a good home - it comes with a two (2) year warranty I passed on it because I wanted manual wind & not date, more of a historical Panerai. Let Me Know.

Thanks buddy. I do like the 287, but I like the look of the others ones for me better. But if I try a 287 on and love it I'll definitely look you up!

What is the point of the lock on top of the crown? Is it just for looks?

As I understand it, this is their signature crown guard which is for aesthetics as well as functional to protect the crown.

I just traded for a 111 and really like it. I didn't think I would but it fits and wears well. 44 mm I have a 8" wrist.

I'm getting ready to sell or trade in my 2010 Avenger soon as I give it a polish and take some good pics, to put towards a Panerai. Does anyone know if it's better to trade it in to an online ebay store for credit or to sell to a member here on Breitling Source? I've never done either so I don't know if I should stay away from the ebay stores or not. My Avenger was bought through an AD. And though I'm probably not going through the AD route for the Panerai, I'm definitely only going to buy one with box and papers.
