In my never ending quest for possible expansion ideas I realized I hadn't really ever considered Girard Perregaux as a serious contender. After a little read on them I realized I may be missing the boat by not considering them in the future. I can't recall anyone I know that has owned one or even mentioned them here. What light can you guys in the know shed on this company? Are they a good quality brand, in-house movements, value retention, etc., whatever your level of experience or knowledge of this brand would be greatly appreciated.

They are interesting. Several if not all in-house movements but don't get the attention of, say, JLC. I tried on a preowned silver dial chrono this weekend. Nice if somewhat simple bracelet and the price was not bad. I have seen some cheaper looking dial designs, at least to me, but I was seriously looking at that chrono. The WWTC is a nice-looking watch. New retail looked a little high but there may be some buys on thr resale market. I'mreally interested to see other feedback as well.

Quality company and very well respected manufacture movements.

They don't tend to retain value as well as some of the bigger names, but as Scott suggests that can lead to some relative bargains in the secondary market. It's not a brand that really 'calls' me if that makes sense - lots of nice watches, but nothing that has wanted to make me pull a credit card out.

Roff I agree, nothing really calls to me in their current line either. This model is one of the closest to calling, but just not enough of a calling like you were saying. That could all change with a look at it in the metal though and picking up a good deal on the Pre-owned market would be a plus.

Some of the steepest discounts ive come across on new watches have been GPs. Not sure why it is, but ive seen 50% off more than once.

Yeah I'll have to agree nothing that screams out to me with GP unfortunately... but on a side note talking about other high brands, I have been kinda warming up to Concord lately... their C1 line looks spectacular... especially the tourbillon... Not that I can afford it though...

I kinda like the dial design, has the complications I like; big date, power reserve, and moonphase.
The case is kind of 'funky' looking though.

I have to agree with you jlee....some of those Concords hold more appeal to me aesthetically than the GP line. The C1 with the tourbillon is pretty wild. I like the C2 chrono as well, but not sure if I like the way they do their straps. I don't think they use in-house movements in most of their offerings, although I haven't researched that aspect very much. I'm sure Roff or somebody else knows more about them. From what I read, they are a fairly newcomer to the industry in contrast to the top pedigreed brands. I don't think they hold their value as well either, but they do offer some interesting looking designs.

You know what I mean right? When I think of GP or Concord, it's one of those brands that you wouldn't mind having if someone gave one to you but wouldn't drop your own money on it... Besides, my wish "list" is still too long... And the funny thing is my list is realistic... lots of them are vintage pieces too... but of course key word being "lots"...

Totally tracking you jlee, although I would have to rank GP higher than Concord just given the fact of their heritage and in-house movements, but they are lacking in their depth of aesthetic design work IMO. That being said and you mentioning vintage pieces, GP has some nice looking older pieces that are quite attractive. I only own one true vintage wristwatch, but would not expanding on that end of my collection a bit. The only drawback is that most of those vintage pieces are much smaller diameters which is indicative of the era.

I think GP are hugely under-rated watches. Lost of in-house goodness going on, and great finishing.
