Just finished watching George Clooney in 'The American'. OK, I am a bit slow catching up with movies but, just my sort of film along with the 39 Steps and anything La Carre. A slow burn thriller with a genuine lack of over the top action. I enjoyed it very much. Could not help but notice George wearing an Omega Speedmaster Professional throughout the film. Absolutely suited his part in the movie as an Armourer, and for me, one of those seminal moments when you know that this particular watch was so right for the wearer and so in tune with the unfolding drama, you could taste it. Cool, great design and it owned the space. Or is that my imagination getting away with me again! Its probably been done here before, but it got me thinking about a discussion with Ling owners on this very subject, with a twist. How many members here can think of a watch that looked absolutely right for the movie it was featured in or, the actor it was strapped to? Not just a watch that you saw in a movie that looked cool, but one that you think owned the movie. If it wasn't there, then character (and therfore the Movie) would have been less for it. Any suggestions? Jim |

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the contributions so far. Her indoors suggested I should have started this thread by saying that the watch needed to be a 'cult' (colt - get it) watch or movie. But, I am not so sure about that. That kind of introduces things like Bond, and so forth. Nothing wrong with that, but not sure that’s where I was going. No, its more that the watch had to fit the character in the movie perfectly or that it really suits the ambiance of the story, in a watch geek sort of way. By the way. Does anyone know which watch James Bond (Sean Connery) donned in his first film, Doctor No? You will be surprised when you find out. Regards Jim |

Doctor No was the first movie that came to mind for me when I saw this topic. Anyhow, it was a no-date Rolex Sub of some sort, on a too-narrow NATO strap. As I understand it, there is some disagreement about whether it was a 6538 or 5010 or something else. Other examples that came to mind immediately (all of them pretty obvious): - Omega Speedmasters in The Right Stuff - McQueen's TAG in Le Mans - McQueen's Sub and Newman's Daytona in The Towering Inferno |

In Dr. No, it's a Sub on leather, owned by producer Cubby Broccoli, who donated it to the cause. You have to look for it, as there are no gratuitous shots of the watch in the film. I have no idea what the actual Sub models are in either film. |

That's because the "Inside Dr. No" documentary on the DVD/Blu-ray sets actually shows the NATO shot when they're talking about how much care went into deciding what Bond's various accouterments would be. One day, I watched Dr. No for the specific purpose of finding the watch, and was confused as all get out when it wasn't there...until I put in Goldfinger. Per the OP, I'll do the inverse: as much as I love the Omega SMP, I always thought it was incongruous that Daniel Craig's Bond should wear one during the big-money poker game in Casino Royale. If you're trying to fit in with the ultra rich who can afford a $10 million buy-in just to play cards, it seems to me the SMP would not be your wrist instrument of choice. Then again, maybe he was adopting the persona of a billionaire who no longer feels the need to show his wealth, and just wears what he likes. |
