To set the scene, I was at the mall today and came across the Movado store. I'm not a fan of Movado, but thought what the hell, lets take a look. I see Movado, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ebel. I make my way over to the Ebel models and see this large GMT, pointer date chronometer certified automatic model. I'm a sucker for GMTs and easily drawn to them. It was $5,300.00 dollars!!! Seriously???

I could buy 2 Breitlings, or a damn fine Omega for that price tag. I just don't get it. Am I missing something here? From what I understand, Ebel is nothing like it was in the past and has no business being sold at such a premium price. As I'm holding it in my hands, I didn't feel I was holding a 5k dollar watch. We all know how a fine watch feels in the hands. You can just tell, and here I was not getting that feeling.

I don't know, call me crazy, but I think the watch together with that price is totally insane. What do you all think? Am I missing something here?

Yes they are IMO...

I could think of 5 other watches that I would buy in a heartbeat... of course pre-owned and in excellent condition... with that kind of money one could do 2 Breitlings as you said or even a nice Rolex sub for that price...

Well....Hyundai just priced a car (the Equus) at about $70,000. Looks great, but you are still buying a Hyundai.

It probably had their in-house movement. I wouldnt buy one, but its not that bad for an in-house piece.

I really like the 1911 BTR range and there's a GMT in there for about that price. In house movement, COSC certified and for me a nice looking watch.

After some research RJ, you are right. It is an in house chromometer certified movement. Granted in house will almost always jack the price up, but still.

It is a nice watch. I'm always a sucker for GMTs. It's nice and flat. I guess I don't know enough about the brand as of late to part with that kind of cash. What's you thoughts on the brand?

Just took a look and would buy one of those way before most of what Breitling is coming out with!

I think that some of the designs are a little bland but the 1911 range looks very contemporary and with a different name on the dial would command much higher prices. They have been producing movements since the mid 90s and COSC certify so mechanically there's not much more that you can ask for.

I'll be the first to admit that I am a watch snob, but they are a serious contender.

Ebel have (IMO) always suffered from looking a little too feminine in the past. However my opinion of them changed a couple of years ago at an event my AD ran when I got to handle a 1911 Tekton. This watch in fact - http://watches.infoniac.com/uimg/ebel-1 ... -watch.jpg

Pictures don't do it justice AT ALL, but it's a superb watch in the flesh. Full in-house movement, very unique chronograph, it's large and yet flat on the wrist - it's just a lovely watch IMO. I periodically look out for one now and then, but they are quite rare and the prices stay pretty high. I can't speak about the GMT the OP saw as there are no pictures, but I'd have no problem picking up and wearing a Tekton.

That's a nice watch. From the side profile they remind me a bit of the old Breitling chronomats -- the ones without the curve of the lugs.
