I am brand new to the world of high end wristwatches and would love some thoughts on a good book for beginners.

I'm sure this has been asked countless times but I struggled to find a good thread via search. Thanks in advance!

What kind of book?

Guides to what's available, histories of brands, histories of watchmakers, technical books????

I have a load but it would help to narrow down your interests.

Primary interests are the following:

1. topline history of brands and what they're all about
2. general overview of watchmaking history (i.e. quartz vs mechanical)

A few suggestions from my collection. None are technical. We just ask Roff if we want to know anything!

If you're in the UK (fill in your profile - it helps!) then this book is stocked by The Works for £5ish if I remember right.

Peter Braun's annual review is a good overview of the market

Finally, have a look at this thread http://www.breitlingsource.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7994&hilit=catalogs and request the catalogues from everyone. Don't hold your breath to hear back from Patek or Omega but most of the others will send something out. Some of the catalogues (eg IWC, Blancpain) are wonderful to have.

Not much on history of quartz vs. mechanical because you are talking 300+ years history vs. 30, but in terms of general books to add to Sharkmouth's list (all of which are great choices) I would add Wristwatches by Brunner and Pfeiffer-Belli
