from my brief time on the forum I can tell there are a noumber of Rolex devotees as well as Breitling fanatics.

in my continuing quest to empty my bank account I visited my local Rolex AD today.

tried on a new all black submariner and to my surprise they had the all green model as well. prefered the all black to be honest and £300 + cheaper as well.

while there I asked about the all new explorer 2 that is out in a month or so in the UK, it looked gorgeous in the brochure and may be £400 cheaper than the sub as well.

0% discount on either was available predictably.

I am favouring the explorer as I have had one before and regret selling it and the 42mm case size appeals as well.

just wondered if any one had seen the new explorer in the metal and what the views of the board are as to the choice I may have to make in a month or so.

I prefer the new white dial explorer 2 over the ceramic sub but I prefer the ceramic sub over the new black dial explorer 2. I think the white dial explorer 2 looks awesome in all the photos I've seen on RF and with all the new updates it makes it a huge winner for me.

I can't wait for the Explorer 2 to come out in the US, mine is already on order but not expected until November.

I haven't seen the new explorer 2 in
person but in photos the hands look too thick-- almost comical. If I had to choose, I'd go for the sub c.

Get both :lol:

Failing that, the Sub certainly is a classic and the SubC continues the tradition. Looks as good with jeans and T shirt as it does with a shirt and tie. You've also got the added bonus of the glidelock clasp for added comfort.

The Explorer II 42mm in white IMHO looks even better than the SubC from the photos I've seen. Not sure if it will look as good with a shirt and tie though. IMHO I think the thicker hands look superb and are a nod to the early models.

Either way I don't think you can go wrong.

I'll say Submariner and here's why - I keep bouncing back and forth on the new Explorer. Bigger size, GMT, heavy bracelet, and a legit clasp instead of the thing Rolex used to use which was to bracelet clasps what clip on ties are to Armani neck wear. All really good stuff.

BUT...I still am having trouble acclimating to that big, clumsy looking orange GMT hand. (I "get" that it's a throwback).

I may be in a minority of one, but it looks sort of cheap compared to the rest of the watch - reminds of of the gmt hand on the Deep Blue I had. One of the things I liked about Rolex GMT hands was the interplay of subtlety and function, sacrificing neither, which the Explorer II and GMT Masters had/have. This new one seems to dominate the dial.

Standing alone on a small penninsula here, but it's how I see it.

Pic below from TRF. I don't think the GMT hand dominates the dial, I think it flows well. And I don't think the hands are too big, the dial is larger and needed slightly larger hands.

thanks for the photo which is very helpful to all but my bank account. I dont think there is a wrong choice but I am still swaying towards the explorer 2 and would be uncomfortable buying the sub, as great a watch and undoubted classic that it is without seeing the explorer in the "flesh" first.

That is the first image I've seen that isn't a a close up macro. Now I bounce back the other way. Grrrrrrr. :guns:

decisively indecisive Shark.....a man after my own heart. As I sat in the Rolex AD this pm it did take reserves of self control I didn't know I had to walk out without that black sub in a bag. almost proud of myself...nearly.

Wow, tough choice. The sub c is so classic but I really like the unique look to the explorer II. I love the gmt hand and thicker hands overall. Nice looking watch. I don't blame you for waiting to see it in the flesh. Now if you can just maintain your self control... Glad there are no AD's around me for that very reason.

this is a really tough call. the politically correct answer is always...go with what you like the most. but how can you truly know what youre going to like the most if you dont spend some time with each piece.

I think the better question is what are you looking for in a watch? is the GMT function important to you? or does the subs water rating appeal more? either way they are both great looking pieces. but if you forced me to pick one.....well i would lean towards the sub. IMO it seems like a piece that will stay timeless forever.

im also bias, afterall i own a sub lol

I think the 42mm size is offset by the steel bezel. I think it might actually wear smaller than the Sub because of that. Just my observation though...

Id go with the sub, no questions asked. Then again, you cant go wrong with either.

And as boogiebot pointed out, the GMT II is pretty much a hybrid of the Explorer and the Sub.
