Post subject: | Help with suggestions, 2 watches |
We are having our second daughter this November. I was thinking that it would be really nice to commemorate this occasion with a pair of watches (one for my wife and one for me). I am thinking to budget roughly 10K total. For my wife, she would prefer something nice and classy probably with diamonds, a smaller to medium face, and a quartz movement. She is not into automatics and I don't think that will change for some time. As for me, my nicest watch is a CSO and I am thinking that I would like something different from that. I am not specifically looking just for dress, but I am leaning that way. As for Chrono or non, I am still up in the air at this point, but it must be an auto. Any suggestions will be great! As for the balance of the budget, the watches do not need to cost the same... maybe not 90/10 but you get the point. I am really liking the sub c, but I'm not sure what else would catch my eye. Thank you in advance, I really appreciate this forum and the people that make it great! |

I bought my wife an Omega Seamaster Acqa Terra quartz with diamonds on the dial - hour markers last year and which she really likes. I can't rember retail but I got it for $2,500 or thereabouts. It's a nice classy watch, a good size and with a WR of 100 meters or so from memory, suitable for pretty much all environments. We also looked at some Rolex and JLC options but just didn't want to spend that much. For you, at that budget you can buy a lot of watches - Breitling , Omega, Rolex, JLC, GO - sporty, classic etc - so hard to list all the options - what do you like? Have you dropped into an AD and tried on a whole bunch of watches? |

I've been looking at getting my wife a Cartier Tank medium size or the JLC Reverso since she wants a square case and a quartz movement. You could look at something like the Omega Aqua Terra Quartz for your wife with the diamond markers and that would leave you with plenty of room, around $7K, to get something for yourself. |

One option is Chopard Happy Sport. With the 3 floating diamonds, can be had at about $4K. 5 diamonds about $5K. With the variety of avialable alligator and rubber straps, it can be worn at anything really. 36mm. My 20 year old daughter's has the white rubber and light blue and black gator straps for looks from very casual to quite dressy. When you get into diamond bezels, the price creeps up pretty fast. For a men's auto, I am still a big fan of the Cockpit (black dial) which can be had on bracelet under $5K, about 4 really. It is to me a perfect crossover watch from dress to casual. Also it has 20mm lugs just like your CSO and any straps would be interchangable. Though discontinued, they can be found new still. A new sub is now over $8K. Even with a killer discount and no sales tax, at least $7, which leaves 3 for hers. With diamonds involved, $3K is a problematic number. |

I have always thought a Reverso would be a cool watch for a woman. Would really love to see my girl in the new Reverso Ultra Thin. |

First off thanks for the replies. sharkman wrote: A new sub is now over $8K. Even with a killer discount and no sales tax, at least $7, which leaves 3 for hers. With diamonds involved, $3K is a problematic number. I had a feeling this was going to be an issue... |

sco wrote: I had a feeling this was going to be an issue... A new Sub-C could be problematic, given your budget, but the Explorer might still be an option. For something a little more dressy, the Omega De Ville Co-Axial Chronometer is another way to go. Factoring in the likely discounts and excluding tax, both watches should go in the mid-to-upper $5k range. I've heard Omega is going to have another price increase in the U.S. starting in September, so if you think you want an Omega, act fast. |

Thanks guys, and please keep the suggestions coming. I really do like the Explorer, but I'm wondering if I would always be thinking I should have gotten the sub... hmm tough one. I am also really coming around on Omega, where I didn't have any good feelings about their product in the past. Am I missing something from IWC in anyone's opinion? I am leaning towards a somewhat dress / casual, non chrono whatever it may be... As for my wife, I will show her the suggestions above and get her opinion later tonight. I really like the Chopards... THANKS again!!! |

What do you think you would like better - the Sub or the CSO? If you sell the CSO, you could up your budget to about $12.5k (give or take), which would allow you to get the Sub, and still have a good $5k+ left to get your wife's watch (again, assuming discounts and no sales tax). If you keep the CSO, you're looking at having to get a less expensive watch than a Sub.* There's nothing wrong with that, if you really like the watch you can get for that money. But if you feel like you're settling, what's the point? * That's assuming your budget limit is an actual budget constraint, and not an arbitrary, self-imposed limit you can raise if you really want to. |

All good points, as per usual... the thought of selling the CSO crossed my mind, but it has sentimental value (as well as I just really like the damn thing) and I cannot get rid of it. I wouldn't settle on a watch, it will have to be something I really love and would not want to replace. Also, buying pre owned would save a ton of cash, but I think I'm a "new in the box" kinda guy. As for the budget, well it's a number I came up with that I would really like to stay under if possible. It seems like the sub may have to wait untill further down the road. I have to think about minivans, diapers, etc... Like I said those Omegas really are looking nicer and nicer... hmmm |

sco wrote: Also, buying pre owned would save a ton of cash, but I think I'm a "new in the box" kinda guy. Me too, with the exception of discontinued models I really like. These days, aftermarket Breitlings are the only Breitlings I'll consider. (Shark's recommendation of the Cockpit is a good one, imo.) As for the Sub-C, a quick search on Chrono24 reveals virtually no pre-owned ones anyway. Most of them are new from grey market sellers. Looks like the model is a keeper for a lot of people. sco wrote: Like I said those Omegas really are looking nicer and nicer... hmmm Omegas are great watches, and although their prices keep going up, they're still generally less expensive than similar Rolex models. I've thought more than once about the DeVille Chronometer. It's a little dressy for a single watch, imo, but since you've already got the CSO, I think the DeVille would complement it nicely. At 41mm, it's nicely sized, and has a simple, classic design that I think will age well. It also has the in-house 8500 movement. In all, I think it's a solid buy, provided you like the styling. If you're considering the Aqua Terra, it looks like Omega added both a blue and a black dial to the standard chronometer lineup this year. (They also added a blue-dial AT Chrono.) Until they hit the stores, probably all you'll find are the existing grey and silver dials. The AT also features the 8500, and sells for a good grand less than the DeVille. I always thought the grey and silver dial versions were boring, but the new ones look pretty good - especially the blue - at least in pictures. |

A pre owned sub is something I have been considering, but I do love that new watch... um smell?? Anyway I stopped by an Omega AD and, although a very nice watch, I did not fall in love with the PO... Just something about it didn't seem like it was the right watch to commemorate a birth. Back to the drawing boards... |
