I've decided to reward myself for some recent major accomplishments in my life with a new watch. The watches I am considering are:

Breitling Navitimer
IWC Portuguese Chrono
IWC Mark XVI
IWC Ingenieur

Now, I realize these are all very different watches at very different price points. My issue is that I am younger (mid 20s) and don't want to give off the wrong message/impression. Do any of these seem too flashy for someone my age to be wearing? If wearing one of these watches would come across as pretentious to the casual observer (i.e. someone who does not know my current financial situation) I would rather wait until I am older.

I am very partial to the Portuguese Chrono and the Navi (leaning more towards the IWC). The other two IWCs I looked at mainly because they aren't as lavish and I really like the styling. I currently wear an Omega Seamaster. One of the senior partners in my office wears a Rolex Datejust and when I commented on his watch he didn't seem like he knew/cared too much about it. No one else is a watch enthusiast.

I am probably over analyzing this decision (I frequently do) but would appreciate any and all input. Thanks

All 4 are great choices, but Flashy? I don't think any of those pieces are flashy. When I think flashy I think diamonds, hideous over the top diamond bezels, bracelets you see rappers wear. I like the Portugese chrono the most out of your list, great looking watch.

I like the MK XVI for an all-around every day watch (non pretentious), second choice would be the Port. Chrono if lack of date is no big deal.

Good luck with decision.

I guess flashy wasn't the best adjective to use. What I meant was when most people see someone wearing a Rolex they may think that person has a lot of money (even though that isn't necessarily true) and if they saw a younger person wearing a Rolex they might jump to conclusions. I'd rather avoid that scenario where I work.

Anyways, thanks for the input.

I am a big fan of the Navi and IWC Portuguese as a daily wearer for a young up and comer. Both will be just the right amount of class and function, and will officially get you into any WIS club out there.

As has already been said the IWC is sans date, but otherwise a very useful and great watch. I went with the Navi and havn't looked back.

I dont think any of the 4 models are flashy btw. Nice yes, but over the top not at all.

Yeah none of these are close to flashy nor would any raise the ire or an eyebrow of a co-worker. We all tend to assume most people know a Rolex, but it isn't accurate. The VAST majority of folks have no idea what is on your wrist, Rolex or not.

IMO the Mark XVI is a bit yaaawn. I could never wear a Port. Chrono - no date (but think it is a really nice looking watch). The Ing or Navi are pretty good choices in my book.

Personally, I'd go with the Portuguese or the Navi. No particular reason, other than I like them better than the other two. I think it's interesting to note, though, that of the options you listed, only the Mark XVI retails for less than a Rolex Explorer, and the rest are only slightly less expensive than a Rolex GMT II-C or Sub-C. If you are considering the Navi 01, it retails for more than any of those Rolex models.

I agree that for the price of most of those watches I would be close to a Rolex but I don't think the average person realizes that. That's one of the reasons I am avoiding a Rolex at this point in my life.

But.you will pay much less on the Navi or IWCs because of much better discount. The Navi retailing at 8450 cost me much less than my GMT master IIc or SubC.

True. I don't know what kind of a discount you got on the Navi 01, but if one were able to get the normal 25% discount, it would actually sell for a little over $6300, bringing it within spitting distance of the Explorer's retail of $6200. I haven't tried haggling for Rolex discounts yet, but my understanding is they are both (1) harder to come by, and (2) not as substantial as on other brands, even when you can come by them - 10-15% at best.

How are you liking your Navi, btw?

I love the new Navi. It has everything the prior model was lacking. I got a little better discount than what you surmised. As for Rolex, the GMT master IIc and SubC are hard to get good discounts on. Some have gotten better, but I can't get a dealer here to do better than 10%. The GMT and Sub are right about the same price as the new Navi. My discount.t on the Navi was 30%, so it was substantially less than what I paid for the 2 Rolies.

Bottom line to the OP, get what you want. Personally, I don't give 2 s##ts what my coworkers think. And again, barely anyone notices anyway.
