I was looking through their site earlier and I need to know. How does a boutique company like this stay afloat while charging 5k+ for a generic watch? When I first saw this brand i figured it would be another deep blue/helson type with a ~$650 price tag. But 5K for a boutique watch with a generic movement? Really?

I really like them but agree they're overpriced. I had an Arctic Diver for a while and loved it, but no way would I have paid anywhere near list price for it. Must say, however, that I thought the finishing on it was way better than anything I've seen in the sub-1k dive watch range.

Kobold is not a lower-end micro-brand in the sense of Helson, Deep Blue, Boschett, Benarus, etc... They are a higher end, primarily diver-style US brand. Simply no comparison. They have been rather well spoken of here before to the effect of, "top USA-made brand." FWIW.

The sub-$1K micro-brands rely heavily on catalogue cases and bracelets. I do not believe that is the case with Kobold.

Root for them - other than RGM (a very small, but excellent watchmaker in Lancaster, PA http://www.rgmwatches.com/about_rgm/ ) Kobold is really all we have.

Kobold is a step up from the other brands, although there is also a fair amount of marketing and ambassadorship to pay for. Value for money isn't there for me - and I would take an RGM over Kobold every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I spoke with the CEO last year and they're willing to do a bsource LE for us, admin put it on hold for a bit, but I do think they're a bit expense.

Yes, I agree they are overpriced! But they are also heavily discounted. RGM is a huuuuuge step above in quality. No doubt about that. He is nearly a one man show though. My brother's family lives in Lancaster and I have been to the facility. But it is a very low output shop.

The only brands I have never heard him saya bad thing about were PP and A Lange Sohne.

To him a watch isn't worth owning unless it is $15,000 +

And many, many over $15K. But he is pretty funny and unlike our resident and self-annointed luxury expert, he occasionally knows what he is talking about.

Every new Kobold watch gives legions of sofa-dwelling oafs an erection, as they escape the honey-do lists and live out their fantasies driving their minivans to shoot paintball guns at each other. I’m starting to think “tool watch” is in reference to the owner and not the watch.

I've always thought "If they're good enough for Sir Ranulph Fiennes to do his day job then they're good enough for me."

However, I have never been able to get hold of one in the UK despite being in personal contact with Mike Kobold

Concur. I looked in to Kobold a few years ago. They look cool, and have the military style which appeals to me. Then I saw the price tag. :wowzers The value was just not there. They had the standard v7750, and a nice case, but that's about it. I have a friend who is buddies with Mike Kobold and he gave me some reasoning as to why they are so expensive. For my $$, I'll go elsewhere.
