these watches belonged to scott rothstien, a former partner of renato watch. he was busted in a 1.2 billion usd ponzi scheme. there are a lot of amazing watches up for auction.

Holy mother of all watch collections! There might be some bargains to be had at this auction. I found it particularly interesting how many lower end watches were in this collection. I sure wish I had a bunch of money to bid on 20 or 30 of them. :)

Sucks that there is no online bidding and the written bid format is from the dark ages - you have to submit a cashiers check for the full bid amount of the item that you want to bid on and the written bid becomes the starting price so you have to pay your maximum amount - no thanks!

That is the craziest collection ive ever seen. I couldnt have even imagined anything even close.

I agree that there might be some serious bargains to be had. I might have to set aside a couple of hours in the morning to figure out if there is anything for me :santa:

And yet, ironically, Rothstein only scored two points on Archie's snob test. What a world.

I'll have my father attend for me as I've heard in the past they'll let them go for 20-30% of value

If we're talking purchase price, a million is a substantial underestimate. I counted 216 watches. In order for the collection to have a cost $1 million new, each watch would average only $4629. I don't think even the least expensive of them cost that little (except maybe the Technomarines and Locmans), and some of them no doubt cost in the hundreds of thousands, if not more. The term "conspicuous consumption" seems wholly inadequate a description.

:yeahthat My thoughts exactly....... but then again I guess if you have several million to spend on watches, retaining any kind of "theme" is always going to be tough!

There's a number of very nices pieces in there, and no doubt some will go for absolute bargains. Just a shame they haven't joined the 21st century by allowing on-line auctions, where they would've made considerably more money IMO. Hell, if they'd just stuck them on ebay they'd go for a load more than they probably will using the archaic method they are currently are. Shame because I might've had a speculative punt on a couple otherwise.
