i dont know what it is about this hobby but i cant seem to stop. i know that we all joke that its like a sickness or an obsession. and obviously none of us buy watches that we cant afford or stretch ourselves thin for. but i tell you i really do love spending my free time looking at watches and thinking about what im going to do for my next purchase. when it comes down to using my disposable income to purchase something, i really do prefer to buy a watch. sure i can go on vacation or save the money for something but in the end i would rather own another piece.

is it the same for you guys as well?

I would say that it's not exactly the same for me. While I do spend and inordinate amount of time on this forum I don't just come here for the watches but also for the general discussions and community atmosphere which really is awesome. Now I do my fair share of watch related study such as reading of reviews and looking at catalogues but that really isn't a major time drain. While I don't know that I'll ever be completely satisfied with what I have i.e. I will always want more, that seems to be more of a human condition. As for my disposable income, I'm much more inclined to invest my funds or spend them on travelling; watches really come far down the list on my spending habits, which I am completely fine with Plus the pieces I really want are just far too expensive to justify anyway.

I agree with some of Tim's points, but unlike other "hobbies," whether you collect watches or just like to read about them, I would argue that collecting watches (for many) is one of the few hobbies that can continue to evolve. I imagine that in our current age of technological revolution, it has a perfect combination of history, advancement in technology, a romanticism of simpler things, art, and an expression of personal definition all rolled into one....as a collector of vintage microphones and radios, as well as a lover of antiques and all things deco, I can look at my other "hobbies" as being finite - there is a beginning and an end to the era. I do not feel that way with watches. Many of the aspects which "revolutionized" timekeeping hundreds of years ago are still being perfected today and even a modern timepiece can provide that perfect mix of history, evolution, technology, and romanticism that those who came before us could appreciate today.

It has gone beyond a hobby for me, it's an addiction. I spend my down time reading about different watches, trying to guess what other member are buying in their mystery threads, and talking to pals that I've met on this board about wathes. I spend my disposable income on watches and I am finally nearing my ideal collection. Going to move one more piece, pick up an el primero next week, then hopefully the new Explorer 2 in a few months and I'll be very comfortable with a rotation that fits my wrist size perfectly for all occassions. There are some really good guys on this board that I really enjoy chatting with, it's a great place to visit for sure.
