Post subject:  Recommendations for a Vintage Watch?

I just picked up a 1951 Omega Seamaster - automatic, all steel, no date, white dial, just simple and lovely. However, it is 34mm and while I love the watch, I'm thinking 38-40mm would be the most ideal.

So I'm looking for an automatic, all steel or white gold, 38-40mm, round, white dial, available between the years of 1950-1965, no chronograph, date is OK. Ideally would have arabic numbers at 12, 3, 6 and 9. I've been mostly drawn to Rolex and Omega, but can't seem to find the right size (38-40mm).

Consequently, any recommendations on other brands or specific Omega or Rolex models would be appreciated.

Thank you :)

Hi There,

I have a beautiful 38mm Zenith Classic from 1970 in absolutely perfect condition. It contains an in-house movement and keeps time within COSC specs. I'd be looking for about $350 for it, which is very reasonable compared to similar watches on-line.

Beautiful watch. Can you put a leather strap on it?

Ricardo, if that watch was around 44mm, you would have already gotten a PM from me! That is a super sharp looking watch.

Drtymrtini,

How about a vintage Vacheron gold dress watch? They are very clean looking and scream class. I believe the size is 36 or 38mm on most.

I've noticed a lot of vintage pieces were not made that big... that said, some Omegas and Breitlings have offered some nice size pieces over the years. Some suggestions:

1) Omega Speedmaster (pre-moon/post moon, any of the Mark series) all of them 40mm. The 861 and 321 movements are manual wind though.

2) Breitling Chronomatic 38mm. You can also look in the 69-70 Breitling catalog scans available on Breitlingsource. A lot of those pieces are still lurking around.

3) a lot of the vintage Rolexes I've seen are capped at 40mm. Maybe a 5513, a 1680, a bit pricey but beautiful pieces in my opinion. If you're willing to go 36mm, maybe a 1601 vintage Datejust?

EDIT: most of these pieces are chronographs...
