I've found a nice Breitling in the salescorner of this forum and seller and me have agreed on a price.

We're both fairly new to this forum so reference checks won't be a solution. How can we proceed?

Can you sent expensive watches from the UK to Holland with insurance up to GBP 2000? My preferred payment option is Paypal because it gives me some kind of Buyer protection.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It is the second time for me that I've bought a watch abroad and the first one turned out to be a fake.

Getting suitable insurance for expensive items, and especially watches, is very difficult in the UK. Bear in mind the UK is the equivalent of a Western Third World in many ways, so simple things like independent insurance for packages in transit (like they have in the States) is next to impossible to find here in the UK. And most of the time, even if you manage to find insurance that will go high enough for packages, as soon as they know it's a watch, the insurance won't be valid anyway.

In terms of buyer protection, the best thing to do IMO is firstly get the seller to send you some specific pictures of the watch with the date set to something of your choosing to prove they own it. Then post the pictures up here (unless they're already on the sales forum), so we can tell you if it's genuine. Then I'd suggest getting the seller's phone number and speak to them. That in itself can go some way to making you feel how genuine the deal is.

Then, when it comes to paying for it, I'd insist on paying by Paypal, and link it up to your credit card as opposed to your debit card/bank account. That way if the deal goes south you have both Paypal's protection, AND your credit card companies protection as well.

If you are sending from the UK you can use a company called Mailboxes Etc they will insure the watch independently for around 3% of the value but they will insist on packing it themselves (extra cost).

If you are happy to take a gamble one of the safest ways to send out from the UK to Europe is to use Royal Mail Airsure, it won't be insured but you don't have to declare what it is, it's tracked all the way and gets secure priority handling throughout.

I've used various methods, never lost anything to Europe or the USA both outwards or inwards.

However, I'm at the point now that if it is high value I'll only deal within the UK, sending watches abroad is bad for the nerves!!

Thanks Stefan & driver8. I did not realize that it would be this tricky. It is not that I don't trust the seller, but there are many things that can go wrong. I'm still in contact with the seller to work things out.
