I have read that at one point Britain was once a wrist watch power house, however I am looking for a list of defunct brand names and wht happened to them and I can find nothing. I was wondering if anybody can point me in the direction of a list or just give me some names so that I can search for antique British watches.

Thanks

Not wrist watches, pocket watches.

I'll try and dig out a list if you are still interested in pocket watches.

Today, the greatest living watchmaker (in my opinion) is British - George Daniels, and his former student Roger Smith is not too shabby either!

For an idea of the various makers Roff is talking about try searching on EBay for fusee pocket watch, an example.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-18k-Gold-Cas ... 20b7852d1c

But be careful there are a lot of nice looking watches that may not be all they seem.

And if you use the search on the top right next to members for George Daniels you will find more links.

Ian

Thought there would be wrist watch brands as well, but yeh a list of pocket watch makers would be fantastic too. I have just started getting into horology and although I love the swiss brands It would be nice to have some british too and I was hoping there where movements made in the UK, what about old Smith's watches are they Fully British made? I have read up about Daniel's he sounds like a very tallented watch maker tho his watches are a bit pricy for me.

Roger Smith's pieces are British made, but also rather pricey
