pre·ten·tious (pr-tnshs)
adj.
1. Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
2. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.

This is from a Vacheron advert in the 1960s:-

The slimest watch in the world is a scion of the illustrious house of Vacheron & Constantin.
Coming from an old Geneve family ... it has breeding and it proud of it.
Did not its ancestors keep the time for all the courts of Europe in the 18th century?
Vacheron & Constantin will not mass produce... they move in the highest circles.
Governments choose them to do honour to reigning sovereigns... assured them of their position as the watch of the elite.
