Post subject:  Shipping a watch from USA to overseas
Anyone care to share what is all involved if I wanted to ship a watch from the USA to say... the UK?

Is this something that the USPS could be trusted to hand off to Royal Mail or would a worldwide carrier like FedEx or UPS be better?

What about insurance and risk?

Through Fedex you'll have to fill out an International waybill, and maybe a couple of stupid clock forms which seemed pretty useless, but I just had to do it sending from Canada to the US. That is simply formality, and the real issue is you can't insure for much. The post office I get a $1,000 max, and courier forget about it. What makes matters worse is having to declare the amount so it's right there on the package, but you're not covered! For piece of mind if I do use Fedex I always send overnight so by 10:30 the next morning I don't have to think about it. I do feel your pain because all of the above is why I'm trying to sell my watches in Canada because I can insure them for the full amount which basically eliminates any possible Paypal hassle.

I have received watches and other goods from the US by FedEx with no problems, both the US and UK post offices seem to have gaps in their tracking systems when you compare them to the major courier services, and trusting the package to one company should ensure a smoother delivery. Value is an interesting concept, as for goods coming into the UK the customs/import charges are based on the declared value, I guess you have to agree what the "shipping value" is with the buyer.

Haven't there been previous posts about taking out separate insurance for shipping higher value items.

All I gotta say is don't send it by UPS!! I've recently purchased a b4b 6.75 off a member here about a month ago. The watch had to be shipped from sweden to Canada (insured @$4500), when it got to my city, they lost it!! Investigation was opened, I got my money back from the seller and the shipping company is sappose to pay the seller full value on what he bought insurance for. I've just touched base with the seller yesterday and UPS excuse is that they "don't insure/ship watches over $500". Now the seller has to take them to court.

How gay is that? Don't think anyone wants to be going thru that.

I did a watch trade with a fellow member, I sent from the UK to the USA by DHL, it got collected from my home address at 10:00 one day and was delivered in the USA the following day around 11:00!

The return trade was shipped by USPS and fowarded by Parcelforce in the UK, it took about 3 days but neither of us encountered any issues, nor import duties, but that's not for discussion here! :wink:

It seems that shipping from the UK is super quick, however, I once ordered a computer BIOS chip from SuperMicro in California, I placed the order on a Friday night online at 6PM, Saturday morning the Fedex guy knocked on my door, neither of us could believe how quickly it arrived!!

I dropped a package off at the post office on Saturday morning bound for Sweden, Sunday morning it was in Sweden!
