Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure most of the members here know of the last thread I had, the controversial one about getting a watch. I think I've changed my mind completely, in a way. The reasons I wanted those 10k watches was/is because of the quality of the movements and how incredible they are mechanically. To be completely honest, I could never really wear a watch of that grandeur because it simply wouldn't be fitting. A watch is already something that is uncommon among kids my age, let alone a watch with a leather strap (which I would truly prefer). As unfortunate as it is, I believe my wristwatch days are over for now.

Watches are definitely going to be something I collect in the future, it really is my hobby and my passion, and I would most likely not sell any of my pieces, thus my search for watches that really stand out to me rather than something that is close but not yet there. My point of this thread is to share the path that I am going to pursue now. Still watch related, don;t get me wrong, just not ones that I would wear. What could that be? Pocket watches.

Pocket watches have always appealed to me because of the way that they are extravagant in their mechanics and their appearance. When I have free time, I tend to visit Sotheby's Auctions site. And for a while now I've seen a lot of pocket watches that, to my eye, are really just WOW! What makes it even better is that the watches tend to be on the older side, usually not in the greatest condition but still well off enough where you can appreciate the beauty. A lot of the pocket watches that I have an interest in are ones that would be within my budget (this is of course after I earn the money), and without the risk of "getting beat up for."

This thread may serve two purposes:

1. To share my change of path
2. (unintended) To prove to those who doubted that I truly appreciate watches for what they are and not for the ability to flaunt them to kids in school

Don't worry about proving anything to anybody, screw'em.

About the pocketwatches, I think that's a pretty cool direction. It's certainly different and something that get's closer to a work of art as opposed to just a timepiece. One question, would you actually carry it around? I'm guessing not, but I thought I'd ask. Good luck.

Not a bad idea, my only thought is if you are willing to spend $4000 on a pocket watch, why not spend that money (or even less) on a decent wrist watch, that is somewhat appropriate for someone your age and wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb when you wore it, after all, a guy's got to be able to tell the time :lol:

I can't remeber your age from your previous post, I thought it was maybe 16?? At any rate, in my mind something like a super ocean, or a colt on a calf strap (I'm just using those as examples) would be something that is not at all inappropriate.

EDIT: Just read through your last post from beginning to end, wholly smokes :shock:

Thanks for the update. I wanted to give you my thoughts on your previous and more controversial post but the thread was shut down before I got to it! :wink:

I'd honestly say that the best bet for just about anyone who'd like to join the the mechanical watch world is through vintage pieces. A vintage pocket watch would be a great way to get some appreciation for the movements and could serve to bridge the gap between now and when you're more financially ready to purchase "The Big One".

Maybe get your feet wet with a Breitling pocket watch. The common ones go for pretty cheap and youll have something to play with for a while.

Don't discount eBay for pocket watches - lots of amazing deals to be had on US pocket watches there. Case in point - this was an eBay pick up - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9789

I am going to disagree with the pocket watch idea. I love em. I own several vintage pocket watches, one has a display back... but they aren't practical unless you going to be wearing a vest with a watch pocket and a chain. I would HIGHLY suggest, as before, to stop reaching for the >$4000 watch (either pocket or wrist) and GO GET YOURSELF A STEELFISH. I guarantee that a Steelfish on a Pro2 bracelet or on a Ocean Racer strap (like I have on right now) will cause your face to cramp up from smiling all the time. And it is half or less than what your thinking now.

I have a whole bunch of these over priced toys (as per the signature line) but the cheapest priced Breitling I own (i.e. Steelfish on rubber) gets 95% of the wrist time. I have no doubt that I will keep this particular watch forever. Without jumping brands and going to Oris, the fish is hands down the best bargain out there.

Something to think about.....

A pocket watch probably won't get you abducted as suggested previously :poke:

What about desk clocks? Take a look at the Jaeger Atmos clocks. They run on atmospheric pressure and are very cool looking. It's the clock in the center of ricardo's picture...which by the way is amazing looking!!! I want one.

Good luck with whatever direction you decide to go. I have a broken pocket watch from my great grandfather....It's really cool but I'd like to get it fixed up one day.

Seconding this-- saw one of these in my AD recently and was quite amazed by the beauty. Unfortunately, if I had something as interesting as this on my desk, I probably wouldn't get any work done, I'm easily enough distracted as it is! However, if you think you can handle the pressure (pun not intended until after I'd written this, groan) it's definitely something to consider.

Yup, I know what the Jaeger Atmos clocks are, very expensive too! I would definitely appreciate that, but I am really looking for pocket watches for their innards, of course, but mostly for engravings and decorations (I truly find those fascinating and quite unique).

Very nice! I had a look at the ebay ones yesterday after I saw your suggestion.
