Just recently a discussion was started here about who you wear your watch, specifically where abouts on your wrist.

This made me think about how I wear my different watches.

These are the best examples I have of how I am willing to "treat" some of my watches when I know they can take it and they become designated as "beaters".

Others I am less likely to wear in such conditions. I baby my 1964 Rolex Submariner. Apart from the use of plaexiglass I'm sure it can take as much abuse as the Planet Ocean, but I just can't seem to bring myself to wear the watch in any situation that may cause damage to the case, glass or bracelet. May be it's because it is 46 years old and is mint condition. I'm not really sure. But the care I lavish on this Submariner borderd on OCD.

How about you? Do you treat the watches within your collection differently?

Generally I only wear my watches while I'm out. When I'm home they go safely into thier Winder.

Back on topic...I just addressed this issue in another thread:

"...I respect whatever reason people have for wanting a watch. Having said that, I've never really been one to seek a good (or at least expensive) watch as a 'beater.' I kind of chuckle at the fact I like diving watches so much, because the diving watches I have will get about as much use underwater as my 4WD SUV will get off road...which is to say, none. Personally, if I were getting a watch for the purposes you are, I'd go with a Casio G-Shock or Pathfinder, and save the four-figure watches for less taxing situations."

Holy crap, Ricardo, the condition of that Submariner has floored me! I'm not too fond of vintage watches usually because some look really beaten, but that thing is PERFECT. I don't know where you got it from or if you're the original owner, but damn. :wowzers

As for me, I have a plastic Timex Ironman that I wear when I know there's a chance of it getting damaged. I can't really afford a decent-quality beater right now because it would break my heart if anything happened to it.

Yeah Jackson that is the other one I like. The Roller Girl one is not bad.

OT, something like a used SO makes a great beater. I don't get how one goes from quality to plastic and feels it adequate.

I have a beautiful 08 Colt Auto II silver dial w/ batons as a beater. In a few years it will go in for it's service and come back a minter. Just can't wear an Ironman.

That being said I have my first ever decent watch, a Seiko Diver, now 15 years old still in excellent condition that has been on hundreds of dives that I never wear now, but still sits happily in the storage tray in my winder, beside my Chronomat.

I say and watch less than $1500 makes a great beater.

I try to fit the watch to the occasion, but there aren't many occasions when I won't wear a watch, just things where there is a genuine risk - running a chainsaw in the bush for example. If I remember then I'll take my watch off if I'm headed to my workshop to run the table saw or something, but not anal about it.

I have a cheap $10 quartz for when I'm not prepared to risk a 'proper' watch.

great topic.

to be honest i only wear my watches if I am not really doing anything accept for hanging out or at work. I dont take my watches into the pool or play any sports with them. I do want to get what you would call a beater. But for a beater I would want to get a Gshock. the thought of scratching a bracelet of case of a regular watch just doesnt sit well for me.

Boogie, would you consider your daily a beater?

When I go to the pool or do yard work I don't even wear a watch. Some days at work I don't wear one either. I don't NEED to have a watch on so I prefer not to have a cheap watch. I consider my beater my Colt, but maybe I am misunderstanding the term.
