Does anybody know how much duty fees on a breitling would be at an airport or if it is possible to avoid paying these fees for a watch not bought from duty free??

yes i have some experience. depends where you live. I live in canada so this is how it works for us. When you declare the watch, they take the price of the watch and convert that to Canadian dollars. Then they charge you 5% GST and 7% PST (total of 12%). Once you have the full taxed amount they charge you an additional 5% on that total for duties.

where do you live another member on here might be able to point you to a good AD close to you for a Beitling.

nice do you know which one you want yet? Im sure what ever you end up with you will love. You cant really go wrong with Breitling. I do suggest trying to get in touch with some of the UK members on here though they should be able to help you out more. People like Driver8 or andrew692003 come to mind. Good luck with you purchase and remember its kind of a un-written rule around here ...but you have to post pics of your new watch (jk) :lingsrock:

Which may well work, but is illegal. Additionally, in most countries the declaration that you sign specifically asks whether you have shipped anything.

UK duty on watches is 4.5% + vat so call it 25%.

Since duty free shops require your boarding pass, I wonder if details of high value purchases get passed through to customs at the destination point?

Unless they specifically ask you for the watch's papers (which they don't have a reason to, unless you look specifically suspicious), they have absolutely no way of knowing. After all, you don't through customs pointing your arm to show off your new watch :)

i travel to the Caribbean often, and i learned something a few years ago, i was constantly getting chosen for random searches at customs and couldnt figure out why. they always searched my bags, asking my over and over" are you SURE you didnt buy anything that you didnt declare!?!?" and they never found anything...then i figured it out. they look at mens wrists, shiny watches tip them off. once i started packing my watch in a carry on, or simply putting it in my pocket, it all stopped. BELIEVE ME, they look at wrists coming back from the islands.

Maybe you're right, there are specific destinations that are being more carefully checked for specific items.

I brought a new B01 back from Cozumel this past summer, prior to returning to the US, I did the research online at the US customs web page on how to I.D. it (number of jewels, watch band material, watch case material, etc.), printed it out to submit to the customs guys, and only paid $115. in duty. Well worth the peace of mind. They thanked me for being honest and said they almost never have expensive watches declared, and also said they will drive the penalties (up to the value of the watch) to the max if they catch somebody trying to get an undeclared watch through customs.

Another sideline of this topic is traveling with any of your watches and what to do so you don't get stuck at customs. I carry a folder with copies of the receipts from the purchase of my watches as well as a copy of appraisals so that if questioned by customs, I can prove that they were not purchased abroad.
