Right now I am thinking about expanding my little collection to the point it's going to stay at for the next couple of years, and something that's recently been pointed out to me is the ominous and shadowy entity known as "the future". Will I still want/wear this watch in 5/10/20/30+ years time? I'm only 27, so I figure I should probably pay a bit of attention to this particular issue when dealing with such highly-priced items. Does anyone else think about this at all, or do people generally just buy for today with the notion that they'll sell in the future if and when they want something different? |

If you try to predict what your future tastes will be then you'll drive yourself crazy. Buy what you love NOW and if your feelings change in the future you can always sell down the road. My tastes wouldn't be what they are today had I not owned my previous watches. |

If you follow that logic through then you'll never buy a watch. Enjoy it for now and worry about the future when it gets here. |

I know what you mean. If you are concerned with your tastes in the future then perhaps its better to go with a classic watch design that hasn't changed much in the past and will probly stay the same for the foreseeable future. Going with something classic is safer since it simply won't go out of style, hence classic design. Just like a good old navy bespoke suit. You'll be happier having a piece that is still stylish for many years and if for some reason you get tired of it you can always sell it pretty easily. Given its classic design folks will be more tempted to by second hand. Easier at least than if you had bought right now the flavor of the month...that might be harder to sell a few years down the road. IMO. Cheers, Alex |

In a manner of speaking I guess it does, but mostly for financial reasons vs. fashion reasons. If it's going to break the bank and put me behind the 8 ball then from that aspect I would be influenced to not purchase. As for fashion sense....what's that?...LOL! |

It has never occurred to me to think about the future. I'm too greedy to get my hands on the watch in the present!

For the record, I was only referring to future taste/timepiece needs, I'm not suggesting anyone buy a watch today thinking they'll worry about tomorrow's dinner tomorrow!  (It's been interesting reading the different responses, though.) |

Actually it was Daniel Defoe in his Political History of the Devil and B. Franklin used it again shortly afterwards. |

I personally think that every watch (popular or otherwise) has it's own "place in history", and as a result I think that if YOU like it today, you will probably always like it. Obviously this assumes you're an adult as opinions can change considerably from being a teenager, and that the watch isn't seriously avant-garde and "of the moment" in some way! That said, of course you may change your mind about a watch over time, but as Roff said, if you worry about that, chances are you will never put a stake in the ground and actually buy one! Additionally it's worth remembering that no-one really knows what will become a future classic and what won't. There was a time when the now classic Navitimer would've been cutting edge! In my opinion, buy for the moment and enjoy it until you stop enjoying it. If you really must keep an eye on the future, either buy something that is already considered a classic (like the Navi for instance), or do your research and be absolutely 100% sure that you love a watch before buying it. |
