If we are talking of wooden watches in another post, we surely have to go back to John Harrison who in the 1720's used different types of wood to construct frictionless parts for clocks to ensure they were accurate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grasshopper_escapement And have a look at this site for some "copy" clocks of Harrisons work.
