I for one believe in a world of total equality, and every single cent you spend on an engagement ring should be accounted for in an engagement timepiece. In fact, if you look at the potential ROI of a great watch versus the ROI of a decent stone, the watch will provide a quicker and more reliable return, especially if you buy something like a limited edition IWC, great Rolex or Patek. Besides, you’ll be buying jewelery for this woman the rest of your life, why don’t you have her buy you something epic and call it a day? I say for every dollar you spend on her ring, she should spend at least two dollars on your watch.

Reading through his posts I certainly was finding a lot I agreed with, but then he lost me completely with an almost incidental comment. DiCaprio the greatest actor of our generation? Credibility: gone in a flash.

I imagine many of you have seen this guy already. Most of what he says, in my opinion, is absolute garbage and, chances are, he will at some point have written something that says one of your favourite watches is crap. If you want an interesting moon phase, you’ll do well here. If, however, you want one of the coolest moon phase watches, save your pennies for the Linde Werdelin Oktopus moon phase. The display is photo-realistic and absolutely incredible. It’ll run you double your $10k budget, but you know what? It’ll make you double the man. To answer your question, no, “Ice-Watch” is not good enough for the Watch Snob, nor is it good enough for anyone who reads this fair publication. I wouldn’t recommend Ice-Watch to anyone, not even the lovechild of my mortal enemy (who helps people with watches while being nice about it) or Hitler. He kind of amuses me actually. I never take it personally if someone doesn't like the watch I wear or the car I drive, so I quite like reading peoples rants over things! As the old phrase goes, "Opinions are like a*se-holes : everyone has one, and everyone's stinks except our own". And besides, it's all very tongue in cheek.

Very amusing! No doubt a lot of what he writes is garbage but there are some diamonds amongst the rough; I definitely agree with some of what he says. And certainly despite no doubt mixed opinons about him and what he writes, it's certainly nice to see a polarized point of view.

I've been reading through some of his other posts, pretty funny stuff - "Owning a minute repeater is like dating Jennifer Aniston; it may impress a few friends, but day to day it’s outdated and more trouble than it’s worth. As for Ulysse Nardin, it’s really not worth your time, as the brand has become nothing more than a flashy toy for Russian oligarchs. In fact, UN dealers are now asking buyers to take four shots of grain vodka before purchasing, and if they fall down, they will not sell them the watch. Seriously, though, unless you’re looking at a haute horology piece from something like the Freak line from Ulysse, you’re much better off with Patek or IWC."

This made me fall off my chair laughing! QUESTION FROM A WATCH KNOB How “sporty” are sport watches? I enjoy running and cycling, and an important part of training is timing your pace, distance, etc. Do you think that wearing a sport watch while exercising is detrimental to the fit or finish of the watch (I'm thinking especially of the effect of the salt in one's sweat on a timepiece)? I imagine this would vary also on whether the sport watch is made of stainless steel, gold or platinum. Umm, very sporty? You seem to forget that mechanical wristwatches have been worn to the North Pole, to miles below the ocean’s surface, and up and down Mt. Everest dozens of times. Oh yeah, and to the god damn moon! Do you really think your little mile-long run and trip to the 7-11 on your Huffy is going to hurt these kinds of watches? Now, if you’re wearing a Platinum watch while doing this, you are deserving of an entire column by yourself.

I've just spent a bit of time reading a few more of his posts/rants, and I've found a whole bunch of things I totally agree with! Especially this line when talking about standard ETA movements - "I have no problem with stock movements when they are appropriately priced, such as the Xetum timepieces. I do, however, have a big problem with stock movements in $5,000 watches, which is commonplace for both start-ups and conglomerate-owned big boys." A man after my own heart there.

OK, but to pick a recent counter-example, you ever see Shutter Island? Actually maybe that's not such a great example - everyone was terrible, even Ben Kingsley (who is a fine actor IMO).
