So I went into this little shop on the base where I work and among the usual Rolex and Breitling replicas there were two that caught my eye. One was a Patek, I have no idea what model it was supposed to be because I've never paid too much attention to Pateks. Don't get me wrong they're beautiful watches, but nowhere near attainable for me. The other was a Graham Swordfish. I just thought it was an unusual replica to see. I get the Rolexes and Breitlings, they're pretty well known, but the Graham really threw me off.

They also had one Breitling that was probably the most hideous thing I've ever seen. It was in a Navi style case, but the dial was open and the opening was in the shape of a butterfly, if only I had a camera. My description can't do it justice. :guns:

Second row on the far right, maybe?

Yep, that's it. Made me want to throw up. At least the one I saw wasn't on a yellow strap.

Come on! It's a 39 "jeweled" watch.

The Swordfish is a common replica. In fact, just about EVERY watch is a common replica. Perhaps the PP you saw was a Nautilus. A rounded octagon case? If so it is the infamous "Marie's Best" replica.

I didn't know Graham replicas were that common. Maybe it's because I'd never heard of Graham before I joined this site. I didn't pay too much attention to the PP. I'll give them one thing, their fake Rolexs look pretty good. Still wouldn't buy one.

The repilca market is HUGE. There are many sites that use real pics and have many models from most every brand with ETA movements in them. Some Rolex, Breitlings, Chopards, even AP ROOs are so well done it's spooky. The better fakes can run form $200-$1000. You can never be too cautious in the secondary market now.

My question is why are they selling fake watches on a base? It would be the same as selling pirated DVDs.

Funny you should say that, they do that too. I've wondered why they allow it and the only thing I can think of is that it helps with morale. This place sucks so something as small as watching movies really helps make time go bye quicker for the soldiers. Plus I'm pretty sure the shops are ran by Iraqi's so maybe it's better to let them sell them so they could make more money to put into the economy.

I really have no idea what I'm talking about though, it's just a guess. Maybe some of the more senior military guys on here would know why it's allowed.

I was a Marine Reservist, far from "senior military," but this is certainly a question of perspective. Counterfeiting is a serious issue, but buying a fake watch can't even come close to taking rounds from an enemy who doesn't wear a uniform or carry a flag. The officers over there have way more serious problems on their plates than they can handle.

Peace

I completely understand what you're saying. If we can let these guys get shot at and have their trucks blown to hell then they should be allowed to watch movies and buy crappy watches if they want to.

Yeah no shit. They should be handing out beautiful women with those fakes at the very least.

I've watched a vast number of pirated movies overseas, and it never even occured to me that it was an issue. Now that I think of it, I'm sure there's some officer or sergeant major somewhere, who needing to justify his existence, banned pirated movies. I've never seen it, though.

I spent plenty of time watching movies and buying watches and smoking cigarettes on a camp stool in Iraq and other places. I will say that the fake market does exist and IMHO does not detract from the gen market. Everyone who buys a fake knows it is a fake and treats it as such. In my case, it lead to may gen purchases.
