Post subject:  "Borrowing" A Deep Sea
I'm presently borrowing a Deep Sea, which means I payed for it, have it on, and am under a 15 day refund provision with the AD. It's a really nice case and there are plenty of pics already on this site.

The potential issue is the bracelet - the lugs are 21mm but the removable links and clasp are a mere 15mm by my measurement. I assume Rolex is using the same size removable links so the same screws from 40mm models will fit, but it seems to make the watch "feel" top heavy.

Any owners out there who have experienced this? Is it a matter of acclimation? I'll see over the long weekend while I'm out of town.

I do enjoy the look of the watch and ceremic bezel. The bezel moves like silk. And the thing is a beast - even as one used to Breitlings this thing is weighing down the wrist - I LIKE that.

If I do take it back it wil be for the GMT Master-II in black. And cash - that's always a good thing.

DeepSea owners usually point out that the bracelet is very comfortable and can be adjusted to fit perfectly, which is true, but I've tried one on quite a few times and I just couldn't deal with the disproportionality between the head and the bracelet. It's not a "right or wrong answer" kind of thing, it's a question of what you think looks right. To me it looks wrong.

I've had this issue with other watches before and it didn't get better over time, if anything it bothered me more, so I had no reason to think I would get used to it if I bought the DeepSea. That's why I went for the GMT.

Just my view, obviously. I'll be very interested to see what you think after spending the weekend with it.

Haha. Na, just seems a fella should have one. I've already and sadly resolved that the deep sea isn't for me. It tugs and at the underside of the wrist because of the extremely narrow clasp and links. The GMT master II it is - there is one at the AD. Guess I know where I'll be over lunch.

I have been considering a deep sea and have heard mixed reviews. I absolutely love the styling and design. Has anyone else had a disheartening experience with the DSSD?

:lol: Nothing wrong with that, the GMT is an awesome watch. I've had mine on the wrist most days over the last two months, and haven't regretted it for a moment. I only intended to have one Rolex, but I've just ordered number 2, so watch out. :mrgreen:

I havent owned one, but when I tried one on my thought process went something like this:

1. Damn this thing is thicker than I thought (not necessarily a bad thing though).
2. What the hell is wrong with the bracelet? Why is it so skinny?
3. mighty fine clasp...
4. Why is the bracelet so narrow?
5. It kinda looks like a lollipop...

Its a brautiful watch, and I hear that its something you get used to, but it could be a pretty expensive experiment.

I tried both the Deep Sea and the Plo Prof on at the same time.

I bought the Plo Prof because I appreciated the extra levels of detail and also the unique case design. Plus the £1.5K that stayed in my pocket. :D

I appreciate you say you will get the GMT Master II (which is another awesome 'piece by the way) but have you considered the Plo Prof as an alternative?

I've not had the pleasure of owning a SDDS yet, but I've tried one on at my AD more times than is probably healthy!

In terms of the bracelet width, I think it works so much better in the flesh than it does in pictures. Personally I have no problem with it at all, although I am happy to admit that it may have been fractionally better if it was just a mm or two wider.

I also think I can handle the width thing OK as my Big Pilot is also extremely narrow at the clasp, and that has a much bigger head than the Deepsea. That took a little getting used to compared to something like a Breitling, but I wouldn't have it any other way now. The Deepsea is an absolute must as far as I'm concerned.

Tom - I think you're making a great move. The GMT II is by far my favorite Rolex and it sits perfectly on my wrist. I tried on the Deep Sea before and it just didn't feel right. It's a beautiful piece but the GMT II is spectacular in every aspect. Post some photos when you can of the GMT.

I'll have to dig through my posts and find it, but I was an early adopter to the deep sea. I tried to love it and may have even lied and said I did. Anyway, it didn't take me long to sell it. I've gone through every Rolex, five different times, and the only one I have kept over the years was the GMT II-C (and my wife kept 'her' DJ and
LV).

Fact - The deep see was the ONLY watch that I ever received a negative comment while wearing. IMHO it takes Rolex classic styling and grossly mutates it into something it's not.

IF the bracelet was a 22/20MM, I'm convinced it would be a different story. Or perhaps if my wrist was different. As it is, it feels like trying to balance a bowling ball on a pool cue. No offense intended to those here who love the SDDS, but it just doesn't work for me. But the price differnetial between the GMT Master II and Deep Sea puts me close to a Seawolf I've been thinking about. And almost right at the new Superocean I haven't totally ruled out. That will have to wait until after the holiday! All in all a win/win.

I put the watch one at 6:30 last night and by 10:30 it was clear it wasn't going to work.

Your observations are EXACTLY my own thoughts on the DeepSea. I want, so bad, to like it. They finally make a case that is "man size" but IMO, ruin it with the narrowed bracelet. I tried it on, again, a few weeks back and .....its just a no go. I think my dislike of the bracelet is two fold. First I am biased to size of my Breitlings, Bell & Ross and even the Steinhart bracelets. Second, to me it just doesnt "flow" right with the size of the watch head. I say this because the bracelet of the GMT IIc or Milgauss arent any different (to my eye) than the DeepSea, but they are more balanced to the size of the head of the watch. So fo me, until Rolex adds a decent width to the clasp, I will never own a DeepSea. I am, more inclined to keep a GMT IIc or the green Milgauss on the list..... (after a Panerai, that is!). :)

I'm obviously in the minority as the deep sea remains my favourite Rolex. I actually really like the clasp, it fits my wrist well. Each to their own as usual :D
