Post subject:  Rolex AD's

Was out today watch shopping as my dad is after a Rolex so thought I'd go along have a little look about and hopefully get him a deal.

Was told pretty much outright by the AD they and nor will any other Rolex AD give discount and found it quite rude that I had even asked !

At which point I explained that I was only asking as I had in the past been offered discount and just mention TAG and Breitling and he just said well they ain't a Rolex !!!

But is it true that Rolex's are not allowed to be discount ?

Cheers

If youre looking at stainless steel models, its common to get that response. Thats not saying that you cant find a discount, but it you do, expect 5-10% at most. Two tones and all gold models can usually be had for a better discount. I remember being at an AD and after discounts, the price for the two tone sub was almost the same as the stainless steel one.

That's pretty standard at AD's. There are some non-US AD's (Mexico is the most famous) that will openly offer discounts. The most I've heard of US AD's offering on the standard SS sub or DJ is about 5% or so.

Like RJ said, if your Dad is looking for one with gold then he can work something. If he's looking for one with a diamond bezel then he should get a much bigger discount since the vig for the sales rep goes way up on those models.

Cheers for info guys, and yeah is was the SS sub !

Was is that thought ? Are the prices regulated ? Just wondering as they must have some leeway in their mark up ?

I actually really liked the sub and did end up looking over a few :-) but think they are 40mm which looked good but after having Breitling on my wrist would like it to be a little bigger, they had a Deep sea OMG that looked good and a better size but the price :-(

Can any of you give me some advice on them ? Mainly the subs is there a certain one to go for ? Is there a previous model which is better or is there a new model due out to wait for ?

Just general Rolex Sub advice as TBH I know naff all about them ! Other then I used to walk straight past them on way to check out the Lings, but now find myself looking at them in a different light !!

They have very little room to discount.
1. Rolex are probably as strict as they come when it comes to policing their ADs.
2. s/s models are crazy popular, so the AD really has no incentive to make less money since they know it wont be long before somebody walks in happy to pay retail.

The new s/s sub with the ceramic bezel, supercase, and new bracelet/clasp that puts the current model to shame, should be out very soon. The AD the other day told me they expect them very soon, maybe July, but it was just a guess on her end. She also guessed about the price, which she thinks should be about $7500, about $1500 more than the current model.
Im sure the exact details can be found online, but im to lazy to look. :geek:

The most I've been offered on a Rolex is 10% and I was honestly pretty happy to be offered even that. They seem to be very strict on discounts which I don't really have an issue with, at least you know where you stand consistently.

Good luck!

Some Rolex ADs definitely won't discount at all, and some will but not by a lot. As others have said, Rolex are pretty strict with their ADs. I have done better than 10% but I don't think that's the norm. In a way it's a good thing because it helps in protecting the resale value.

If you were looking the SS Sub Date (16610), you're probably even less likely to get a discount on that one because it's just been discontinued. A lot of Rolex fans are saying they don't like the new version - I think this attitude will probably soften over time, but at the moment there are a lot of people saying snap up the old version while you still can.

These are all owners of the current sub. The new one is a million times better, and finally brings Rolex into discussion. Nobody can complain that they bracelets and clasps are lower quality than something found on a $100 invicta anymore.

RJ, I completely agree, and I think the new Sub is great, but demand for the old one is clearly going to stay strong.

Where are you based? In the UK it is difficult to get any discount unless you have a good relationship with your AD. I can get 17.5% off list on most models other than the Daytona that is always out of stock.

I'm over Milton Keynes and my dad's Wrexham north wales.

I know my way round TAG's and Ling's but not much with Rolex, dad liked the Sub date 16610 which we were told is now discontinued and has been replaced by a new model which we were told is slightly better but along with a £1500 price increase. Not sure on all this as he did try pushing the sale saying he only had the one 16610 left in..

I on the other hand liked the sub without the date function 14060m but as we were there for my dad i didn't ask to many details so don't know if that is discontinued as well.

Thanks

Cheers for the offer but my dad's the type who likes things brand new, even when I said I've seen a few on forum BNIB who wasn't interested.

You seem to know your stuff, I know I'm correct in thinking the 16610 is discontinued but what's happening with the 14060m ?

Cheers

You can still get the 16610 (I think I can get one with 17.5% off) but they are being replaced by the Ceramic Submariner (is this really worth an extra £1500? I think not) Why not go foe the Ceramic GMT? Great watches and has a lot more wrist presence IMHO. Or get him to go for a 50th anniversary Submariner (the LV or Kermit) These are the ones with a green insert with Maxi dial 8) They will more tan likely stop making these this year and will only go up in value. Again I can get these for 17.5% off list from an AD.

Cheers mate i'll have a word, but when i spoke to him earlier he'd eyed up an Omega now lol..

But now i'm left looking over them my only concern is the size think they are a little to small for my wrist well apart from the SDDS but my wallet couldnt take the hit, well not with getting married this year, but then in thinking if i did come home with the SDDS I may not need to pay for the wedding lol
