THE OMEGA RAILMASTER
The name of the OMEGA Railmaster reflected on the brand’s long history of providing timepieces for railway professionals, for whom punctuality was a matter of professional survival. The original Railmasters’ innovative anti-magnetic design suited them perfectly for anyone who worked close to powerful electrical fields. The contemporary Railmaster Chronometer blends the classic styling of the original with Co-Axial technology.

The 1957 OMEGA Railmaster

The 1957 OMEGA Railmaster was designed especially for scientists, technicians, electricians and people who needed to work close to powerful electrical fields.

It had a double case which formed a shield against magnetic fields higher than 900 Oersteds (abbreviated Oe), the unit of measurement for magnetic field strength. By way of comparison, conventional anti-magnetic watches offered protection against the influence of magnetic fields with a strength of up to 60 Oe.

Its movement, an OMEGA calibre 30 SC T4-284, was protected by the unique double case construction. The outer case was made of stainless steel, with a polished and bevelled bezel, polished solid enveloping lugs, a reinforced crystal and screwed case back with an O-ring gasket.

The inner case consisted of an “Armco” dome, a casing ring and a one millimetre thick dial made of a soft iron called “mumetal” which meant that the movement sat in a “Faraday Cage” and was shielded from magnetic influence.

The 1957 Railmaster was also water resistant to 60 metres (200 feet).

The OMEGA Seamaster Railmaster Chronometer

The case and dial of OMEGA’s contemporary Seamaster Railmaster Chronometer bear strong resemblances to those of the 1957 Railmaster but there are some key differences inside the watch case.

The Seamaster Railmaster Chronometer is powered by and OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 2403 working in concert with a free sprung-balance without index. The combination of these two elements makes the Co-Axial calibre 2403 a high precision chronometer with stable accuracy over long periods of use.

The Seamaster Railmaster Chronometer features a domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and its transparent case back makes it possible to monitor the precision performance of the Co-Axial movement.

The Seamaster Railmaster Chronometer is water resistant to 150 metres (500 feet)

I love the Railmaster. Great watch at a bargain price (relatively speaking). Beautiful pics too.

This watch did absolutely nothing for me until earlier this year when I saw a gold version in an AD's window (ironically while waiting to meet someone to buy a different watch).

It just blew my mind - absolutely incredible watch.

Those are absolutely stunning pics, Altair!
I have been looking around for my next watch - would like it to be a manual wind. The Omega Boutique at Vancouver Fairmont Hotel had a 49mm XXL Railmaster - which is a manual wind - in their display window a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, I decided to pop in and have a look at it. Well, it turns out that it is indeed still there, but it's the white gold Limited Edition model @ $20,000CAD. I did get a chance to try it on, and even if it had been the stainless steel model it would have been just too big. And 20 grand is completely out of the question for me.
The staff at the Boutique shop are extremely friendly, accommodating and helpful. We discussed the Railmaster, that I have the 36mm midsize model, and that most of the Railmaster line is being discontinued. I didn't find out when exactly, and it wasn't a surprise as I already heard rumors.
What did surprise me is not that the 49mm XXL is the only Railmaster to be remaining, but that it is going to get a new look. I was shown a catalogue with some of the upcoming models. It appears the Railmaster will be getting the Teck-grey dial like the AT 8500, and losing the 3,6 and 9 numerals. There will only be markers, a bit narrower and like the Aqua Terra. There will still be the small second hand at 6 o'clock. The new model, in fact, looks like a 49mm AT 8500 with teck-grey dial and small second hand. To me, it looks very little like the present model. It will also be classified as an Aqua Terra.
Anyway, I am sure most of you have heard the rumors about the changes regarding the Railmaster. I think it's too bad really, but it does make me glad to have mine. Just thought I would share this with you.
I have 4 Omegas, the Railmaster being my favourite. If it wasn't for the fact that I have worn nothing except my Rolex Explorer I, which I got on Feb 1, I would probably be wearing the Railmaster the same way. I was going to sell all of my Omegas, now I am definitely keeping the Railmaster. Especially since it will be discontinued. I would hate to have sold it and then regret it later. As you say, Altair, it really is a special watch, and with that history even more reason to love it.
I got mine with the stainless steel bracelet, but later got a dark brown OEM Omega strap with deployment for it:

Quite sad to hear the Railmaster is being discontinued.
Now that I have seen your pics, I am almost liking the colour of your strap better. Especially with the white stitching.
